I'm thinking about ditching my Sprint Treo 600 for a UX50+V3c or e815 solution, and I trying to find out if BT tethering is possible to access the Internet, get my POP email, etc. Does anyone have any experience with this setup? I've seen the GSM/GPRS info on this site, but I'm wondering specifically about Verizon's versions.
TIA

mobile hi-speed has the setup-free for connect palm to almost all ir-bt phone, but maybe for gprs only or maybe you can suggest them to make it available for cdma version?
The phones you are listing only are on Verizon. As such, verizon makes it the most dificult to tether and if you are able you will be taking from you minutes in your plan. Any other company would be better and I would recommend Sprint. I have the A900 and it is just amazing. As long as you use a reasonable amount they don't charge anything extra. If you draw attention, they have a $25 plan for 40mb that is flexible until $70 and then its unlimited. They then have a $40 or $50 plan that offers unlimited tethering through the phone. These options are cheaper than anyone else and this is for high speed internet. I use the treo 650 for regular speeds, which is still pretty darn fast, and I have never paid more than the $10 unlimited fee for internet use. Cingular and Tmobile phones are usually pretty open to allow this but their charges are a bit more. Verizon phones are usually locked in some way to prevent this and are more dificult to set up.
But, this combo is great. I used it for over a year until I got a treo 650. I'm coming back to it for business use but for personal use I still have my treo

Don't buy phones from the service provider. Buy non-branded phones that haven't been crippled, insert the SIM card from the provider, and you can use bluetooth just fine. (And change providers at will too, without tossing the phone.)

I don't mind using my minutes to get my email, and I don't even mind paying for data service. I just want it to work! It will suck if I can't B/T tether either phone with the UX50 I just purchased. I've had a Sprint Treo 600 since 12/03, and while it's perfect for work days, I don't want to carry that big thing on nights or on weekends. Thus I'm switching back to a two-device solution: UX50 + V3c. Unfortunately it's Verizon only for me.....they have the best coverage where I am, and all my friends and family use Verizon so everyone gets free mobile to mobile.
If that's the case, then you will be using your minutes. You will also have to find the hack as it is not easily done. Verizon purposely makes it so you can't tether. But, the great hackers of our time always find a way. My friend has a 815 from Verizon and he had to use a hack in order to tether and it would come out of his minutes. In which case he was always tethering at night and the weekends. A place like howardsforums would be great to look unless anyone here knows. When I say hack I mean a code and not like an actual hack of opening up the phone or uploading software. Good Luck. If you find out how, please post it as there are many users who would benefit. I could possibly find out from my friend if you can not find out.
Verizon just announced today the native ability to tether (or use their phones to connect another device to the internet). Catch is that it is only "allowed" through connecting it with USB cable and not through Bluetooth. Although this should make it easier to "hack". They announced a pricing of $59.99 a month which I assume is for unlimited and it won't use minutes.

Yeah, I saw that! Nice to know that I CAN legally tether my V3c, and at EVDO speeds. But I still need that BT tether.....I'm not carrying around a USB cable with me. Hopefully by the time my UX50 arrives next week someone will find a way.

Well, I'm happy to report that my Verizon V3c and my new UX50 worked perfectly via BT right out the box, once I added the Broadband Access plan for $59.99/mth. Ouch. Oh well....it's only money. The speed test from dslreports.com showed 133kbps, but maybe I'm limited by the speed of the BT connection. Speed seems pretty fast for a two-device solution. What's the best browser available for us??

Hi everybody,
I am a PEG-UX50 user.
my question is to the motorola v3 razr owners/users.
Did you notice or have a whining (noise) in the keyboard of your Razr V3
during the connection to your palm and/or when the Razr V3 keyboard light is on?
Do I have to worry or this is a common problem?
If you think that it is not related with this platform, can you guide me to the right one?
thanks in advance.
:)

No whining with my CDMA V3c, but I'm assuming your is the GSM version, so I'm not sure. It's easy to test, though...find another one (store, friend), and see if it does the same thing. Or, go to Motorola.com and write or call to their Customer Support.
Actually, 133kbs is about as fast as your going to get through a 1xRTT network, which is what Verizon is running when not in EVDO. The phone is EVDO but you may not be in a EVDO area or may just be out of the coverage area. I'm in Chicago and I usually get EVDO with Sprint but sometimes do not. I'm glad it worked so well for you. That's awesome, sucks that it costs that much but if that's alright for you, more power to ya.

It's strange, because the phone shows the "EV" indicator when I'm checking the speed. Then again, I've read some posts at Howard Forums that this is the Bluetooth port speed reading, not the actual speed. I don't have a usb cable to test for actual speed since both the V3c and the UX50 have mini-USB connectors, and I don't have (or have ever seen) a mini-usb to mini-usb cable.
Users on Sprintusers were able to get upwards of 200-400kbs. Maybe even more. Although, with the cable they were able to get just under 2x that. It may just be the EVDO is slow in the area. I've been in situations where my phone (an A900) was blazing fast and then just quick. As I said before, it could just be your area. Also, its plausible that Verizon just caps it as EVDO is capable of so much speed and they do not want everyone utilizing the bandwidth. I'm almost positive that it is not a Bluetooth limitation. I can check and give you exact numbers but I'm pretty darn sure. ;)

I just tried again in a different location while I waiting for my oil change:303 kbit/sec. Interestingly enough, my home wifi b/g router was giving me consistent 335-350 kbit/sec speeds. Then I cleared my cache, and began getting 240-270 kbit/sec via the wifi. This was using the 200k mobile speed test from dslreports.com, and I have Fios 15/2 fiber optic service to the router.
What's the difference between kbit/sec and kbytes/sec?
8 bits = 1 byte. Those speeds sound about right. So it probably was your location. Not all coverage is equal as it were.

Actually, for bandwidth calculations, 10 bits = 1 byte. Simplified, and disregarding different transmission protocols, there's a stop bit and a 1-bit length pause -- if it was transmitted as a single stream, the device on the other end wouldn't know where to chop the data into bytes.

I had to chime in on this one- just as an FYI, if you are interested in a usb to mini-usb. you can find them at radio shack, it doesnt have to be a "data cable", it can be a digital camera replacement cable, and it only cost me $17. I just grabbed one today, and it worked fine.

USB to Mini-USB are everywhere. What I would need is a MINI-USB to a MINI-USB cable.

Maybe my reply will be too quick and hasty, but I have to say that as far as I know, for about just only *20* dollars extra (additionally to a phone service) you get a FLATRATE on GPRS. That's with T-Mobile...

$20? If all you need is web and email access, T-Mobile provides unlimited GPRS access for $6 per month (in addition to the plan -- the cheapest plan is $20 per month, I think). Works pretty well -- you have to set up Netfront to use a proxy server, but otherwise the service is nice.
