View Full Version : About to buy my T|X--Any Last Thoughts?

Okay, my LifeDrive is in for repairs and past my frustration tolerance, my backup T|C is literally falling apart, and my PalmPaysBack points for my friends' LifeDrives *finally* were credited (thanks to some behind the scenes e-mailing!) so I'll have enough by the end of the evening to buy a new T|X. I'm planning on trying the latest G1 patch rather than my licensed TealScript at first, since I think I can avoid the Blazer problem given my use. I'm also planning to install the home button hack, and probably an overclocker to push it up a bit (I use Mapopolis, and speed may matter). I've got 2 1 Gig SD cards, although I may only need one for my maps and my other files, and all my LifeDrive chargers and Bluetooth thingies should work well, so I think I'm set.
Any final suggestions from the T|X community? ("Surrender Dorothy" would be one example, if you think I'm off base in doing this.) Thanks muchly! {Prof. Jonathan, looking forward to switching fora from LD to T|X full time!}

Hi Professor,
I think you'll be happy moving on to a TX.
I had a TC for about 1 1/2 years, went to a 600 and then a LifeDrive. Went quickly to a TX and I am quite happy. It's nice to have a unit you can trust and is a delight to use. There's pleanty of people here to help if you have questions once you purchase.

Sorry, no smart ideas for you.
I wish you all the best with your TX.
I am loving mine.

Good luck with G1 and overclocking. I've learned to use G2 with TextPlus and RescoLock and let others like you push that edge. My TX is a stable, happy camper with lots of apps and no tweaks.

What Dick Tracy said.
I am, on the whole, happy with my TX - and this after a brief affair with an Axim nearly twice as 'fast' as this Palm. Sure, I have found that some programs I'd like won't work on it - but overclocking or changing the input won't fix those problems - and frankly, if the device does upchuck with a little puff of smoke, I'd like to be able to contact Palm and be able to blame them, not me, for the problem.
The G1 vs G2 argument is really old now - and while I grant you the G2 as deployed in the TX has an odd lag not found in earlier versions, the continued whining about how much better G1 was is pretty boring, too.
Why, I've even heard that there are pens and paper that can accept shorthand, cursive and block text - they still exist but I see no one moaning about returning there...
;)
Overclocking remains (as with desktops) the realm of extreme hobbyist nerds - and I see no reason to give Palm an additional reason to not honour their warranties or offer Support. Its all a cute experiment, but do you really need to have software that requires this? And if you do (and assuming its written specifically for Palm) perhaps you chose the wrong device in the first place and should have chosen the device the program will run on.
Learn to love the Palm you have. There are some fairly obvious lapses, sure - but at least its not WinMobile and Outlook 2002.....

Funny about the overclocking comment, as I loaded the software onto the palm and played with it, but really found it unnecessary for speeding up apps. I guess I could play better videos with overclocking, but I get video at 1000kb/s and audio at 96kb/s on a 480x352 video, so it works fine for me. Docs to Go reacted a bit quicker, but I don't notice much.
That being said, I did keep the software on, but not to overclock. I found that by underclocking ptunes down to the 150 range, I could increase my music time to over 11 hours. Handy for intercontinental flights. Not that I've taken any yet though!!!!

try to learn how to use G2... it would be slow at first, but when you experience it for a few days you will write faster than G1... i know i did... tealscript and G1 seems like having some compatability issues with some apps... i know that G1 does have some compatibility issues with blazer when tapping on a field...
better still, get a keyboard, you won't regret it... that is if you have a space in your pocket/bag for it...
about your home button thingy, get myskin 2.0... it has a neat feature to let you put your own personalised picture on your silkscreen... it also changes the find to home icon for you...
if you are able to get netfront and maxx, do it... it helps improve your net surfing experience...

I have a Bluetooth keyboard, and use it for major text entry. As for G2, I learned it first for my Tungsten C, and then tried it again on my LifeDrive, and replaced it on both. It's just inefficient for me, especially after 10 years of using PalmOS *with* Grafitti. Not only that, but I like being able to do slash shortcuts with T, I and K, none of which works on G2. Doesn't matter how long, I won't write as quickly in G2 as I do in G1, not until another 10 years have passed!
Finally, the need to find the middle of the screen for an uppercase letter (and yes, I know there are hacks, but isn't the point of this to avoid hacks if possible?) is *really* annoying when you don't have a real or virtual Grafitti area to work with.

Caps tip on TX. Territory directly above WiFi and GA on Status Bar.

Mabe a hac that put a gray doted line on the screen for the caps area would be useful, then you would configure to work only in the specified apps where you would be writing on the screen.
The dotted line would appear as soon as the screen was pressed so that if you cross the line you get your caps letter.

ProfJonathan,
With regards to G2 I actually find it quite easy to use coming from a Pocket PC, and I've only had my TX for one day. If finding the middle area for writing upper case letters seems really difficult or annoying to you, you can change the input area by tapping and holding the "input area" icon on the bottom right of the status bar which pops up three options. The default is the one at the bottom, the option in the middle will give you three distinct areas for small letters, uppercase letters, and numbers respectively.
Hope you find this useful!
