Do not know how common this is; I know I read this once before but cannot find it now; but I though I would share this as a possible warning to others.

Yesterday, with my LifeDrive turned on, I was putting it onto its cradle when I heard a pop of a static discharge; the device started to reset. At the point I did not panic, for I have seen this happen before with other devices; a static discharge near the Hotsync connector causes the device to reset, after the reset is done no harm was done. So I simply set the LifeDrive back into the cradle and went on to do something on my desktop computer. After a few minutes I glanced back at the LifeDrive. It was still displaying the PalmOne splash screen. Now normally the PalmOne splash screen is displayed for maybe a second or two, then it switched over to the circle Palm splash screen, where it stays for about two minutes. So I picked up the LifeDrive and performed a normal soft-reset. The PalmOne screen appeared, but never the circle Palm screen. So, I performed a hard-reset (I had Hotsynced recently, so I was no worried). I was presented the reset choice screen with the choices of soft-reset or secure-erase (I have a password set, so the quick-erase option is not given). The secure-erase claims to take about 20 minutes. I selected the secure-erase. The screen changes, indicating that it is performing the secure-erase. Forty minutes latter, the device is still, "working". So I perform a soft-reset. The screen changes, indicating that it is performing a quick-erase; odd. Twenty minutes later, still "working". Soft-reset or Hard-reset, no difference, it goes straight to indicating that it is performing a quick-erase. Have to go, slipped the LifeDrive into my pocket. About four hours latter, the battery finally dies. Plugging the device back in, less then a minute latter the screen comes on indicating that the device it still performing a quick-erase.

The LifeDrive is toast.

Additional information: When one performs a soft-reset, for the next few seconds, if I hold the device up to my ear I can heard a faint grindy clicking sound. Presumable the sound of the hard drive trying to seek, but given up after a few tries.

So, I have since called Palm and now have a Repair Service Order, and so we wait. In the mean time I have pulled out my old Tungsten|T out of retirement, and have Hotsynced my PIM information, and a few other programs, to keep me going until the LifeDrive returns.

As I said earlier, I read about this kind of thing happing to some other LifeDrive owner. Therefore, during these (for those in the northern hemisphere) winter months, others with LifeDrives might wish to take a little extra precaution with static discharges.

Hi Thanks
I hope the T3 can handle well 2gb someone using that capacity can please confirm if it can and any known issues,
about the static issue i am really looking to the possibility of its contact with the HD or it is not capable of handling infomation properly due NVFS too many LD burnouts

This is what happened to mine! Except I dpn't think there was any static discharge. I don't actually work or live anywhere with carpet or anything like that. I wasn't sure if maybe it bumped into something too hard and messed up the HDD. But I heard a clicking every time I tried to reset. And then it just froze on the reset palm logo screen. Now I will try to be careful about static just in case (I got a new one). Thanks for the heads up.

I think I read on the brighthand forums that the T3 could only handle up to 1 gig cards, but you should check there and see.

ptmin,

I use a 2 gb SD card for my Tungsten T3 (for movies and music) without any problems.

Yeah, I sent mine in too. But first I disassembled it and took some pictures. All I can say is that these seem to be rather cheaply put together. In one of the pictures that I uploaded, the one with the ribbon cables going to the syncing connector, you can see a piece of metal that's all twisted out of shape, yet still screwed in anyway. Also, there's some sort of short-out/burn mark on the circuit board that the audio jack is connected to. I've also uploaded a video (from my cell) of the noise. Turn up the volume. Same sound you guys are getting?

Here's my uploaded stuff:

I think a bump may not be the cause.... I was walking to my car carrying my LD when my colleague waved goodbye. While waving back, my LD slipped and landed flat on the ground. Picked it up and tried testing -"phew !" it was ok.

The incident happened about a month ago and my LD is still working fine today - "touch wood and better not speak too soon"....

Maybe the hard casing had provided some protection - like a bumper. I wouldn't imagine what it would be like without the hard casing.

Close shave.

ronsoo- Yeah, I had mine in a hardcase too. I was suggesting that a bump did it because I don't have carpeting so I don't know how I would get a static shock. Maybe I went somewhere and didn't remember or took off my sweater. Or maybe it was one bump too many, don't know...

Dmitry wrote somewhere that there's no tolerance for errors with these devices. I've burned through one LD already and wracked my brain trying to figure out "what I did." Sure, it could have been static, it could have been the cold, whatever. Bottom line: It wasn't my fault, and there's nothing I could have done to prevent it. Destination failure. My gut feeling now is that Palm's sketchy NVFS implementation coupled with Palm's uniquely partitioned hard drive, little RAM, a world of software spanning a decade or so, and no error tolerance made the situation ripe for a simple file corruption, effectively sinking the ship. If we had some PC tools to redo the hard drive, I bet 90 percent of these dead LDs would be walking again at the consumer level. We need someone to empower us in this respect. Or, we need Linux ASAP. Our one-year warranties expire starting this summer, folks.

Well I finally got "my" LD back from "Repair" today. They apparently felt that it was unrepairable for this is not the device I sent them. Also I can find no evidence that this is a refurbished device, it appears brand new.
