I am expecting my new Palm tungsten T/X to arrive soon. I am migrating from the wonderful Palm Tungsten E, which apart from the screen whine (marginally bothersome) has served me extremely well.
I run the following third party programs on my TE which I hope to be able to move onto my T/X. These are; Softick Card Export (Invaluable), e reader pro, Fonts 40S5, Grx View, Kinoma 3X, Power Run (invaluable), Pocket Tunes, Quick Spell, and Word Comp.
I have a couple of queries that I need some help with;
1. Should I change the User Name or keep the same one that I had on the T/E ?
2. If I keep the same User Name, will I be able to re-install the above programs I have on the T/E straight onto the T/X using the same activation codes or registration numbers, or is this wishful thinking ?
3. Will I have to buy all these programs again for registration and use on the T/X ?
Any other advice for a new T/X user always appreciated.

Tungsten E to Tungsten T/X
... a bicycle to a ferrari...
...which apart from the screen whine...
THat's not going anywhere
Softick Card Export (Invaluable)
not very reliable on tx. consider using "drive mode" from T5
e reader pro, Fonts 40S5, Grx View,
so far all good
Kinoma 3X,
WHY?!?
Power Run (invaluable),
you won't need it anymore. 128MB ram should cover you
Pocket Tunes,
comes with the device
Quick Spell, and Word Comp.
never heard of those, sorry
1. Should I change the User Name or keep the same one that I had on the T/E ?
probably not a good idea
2. If I keep the same User Name, will I be able to re-install the above programs I have on the T/E straight onto the T/X using the same activation codes or registration numbers, or is this wishful thinking ?
3. Will I have to buy all these programs again for registration and use on the T/X ?
seems like the same question to me:-)
some might work, but the developers will not be happy. most programs are licenced on per device-user unit fo new device would usually mean new registration. Of course they will not come with the SS to your door to check, so this is all on your conscience
Any other advice for a new T/X user always appreciated.
yeah, enjoy

Word Complete will run...but...it won't work in Documents to Go and it will interefere with the input boxes in Blazer and also cause more Blazer related soft resets.

The best way to upgrade from a TE to a TX is to follow Palm's upgrade guide to the letter, it will save you many a head ache. Support ID: 40720 (http://kb.palm.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,kb=PalmSupportKB,CASE=obj(40720),ts=Palm_External2001) will take you through it step by step.
I did this when I went from my TE to my TX.

I have always followed Palm's upgrade directions with 100% success. There are presently a T|E, E2 and TX on my desk.

I am expecting my new Palm tungsten T/X to arrive soon. I am migrating from the wonderful Palm Tungsten E, which apart from the screen whine (marginally bothersome) has served me extremely well.
I indirectly upgraded from a TE to a TX as well.... with a Zire72 in between..... you will be very happy with the TX!
As for the software compatibilities:
Card Export - I use version 2.21.777 just fine and have never had problems with thsi version (earlier versions I did). I have also tried Card Reader and Drive Mode and have actually found this version of Card Export to be the most reliable on the TX. It is a bit larger than the others (and does not have the nice background mode that Card Reader has), but with all the memory in the TX this is not a problem.
EReader Pro - Make sure you install the version from the TX CD (v2.6.2). The latest version available from ereader.com is v2.6.1 and it is very buggy on the TX.
Fonts4OS5 - Again, make sure you get the most recent version for the best TX support. You will need to make sure that Blazer (and probably VersaMail as well) are set to the default font or will have so many resets you will be quickly asking for a refund.... which would of course be a mistake.
GRX View - I am not familiar with this program.
Kinoma - Use TCPMP!!! It is a phenominal piece of software in very active development. I know some people still prefer Kinoma (Sammy over at PalmAddicts, for one) and as far as I know it the only way to watch iTunes video on a Palm, but I still much prefer the broad format support of TCPMP (just make sure you have a big SD card for storing video/music/etc.... >= 1GB).
PowerRun - As mentioned above, the TX has plenty of intenal memory and PowerRun will no longer be needed. I used it all teh time on my TE and Z72 when I only had about 26MB of available memory, but you'll now have roughly 4x that. I have all of my applications stored on my TX and only the SD card for larger databases (VideoHound, BibleR+, DataViz, etc), ebooks, documents, pictures, audio, and video.
PTunes - If you have the deluxe verion you will need to install it as the included version has limited format support.
QuickSpell and WordComp - I am also not familiar with these.
As for the screen whine.... this does still exist on the TX, but there is a great program from Dmitry at PalmPowerUps.com called WarpSpeed which will take care of it for you. He offers a free demo. This program can also be use to over/underclock..... but be careful not to try making you TX's processor keep up with your old P4 on your desktop.... you'll get a scare when you palm stops working until you serach the forums and find that this is normal and can be fixed......
As for the other questions.... when you bought the software you probably just bought a single unit license. I would reccomend using the same Hotsync ID (but make sure when installing old software you follow Palm's upgrade instructions) so that many of your registration codes sill still work, but make sure, for conscience sake, you remove those programs from you TE before selling it on ebay, giving it away, etc. Some software has a device specific key that the developer uses to generate the registration key. For these programs you will need to get the new device key and email the developer to get a new registration key. Most of the times they do not mind doing this; just explain that you are upgrading from an older device that you are no longer using.
Depending on what type of connectivity you plan to use (BT to a cell, or wifi, or both) and what type of use you want to gt from your device there are many programs that you've probably never thought of using since you've had a nonconnected device.... let me know what you think you'll be trying to do and I can give you a lot of reccomendations.....

Hi Guys
Thank you very much for all the replies. I am so looking forward to getting my hands on my T/X after reading your replies.
I will follow all your advice with great care, and report back with any glitches, which I think there will not be with all the information you have given me.
Best regards and sincere thanks to all.

Sorry to say, I have had nothing but trouble out of Quick Spell and Quick Check.
Look here (http://www.palmfocus.com/txsoftware.php) to check for software compatability for your new TX. Its a great unit. I know you will enjoy it.

Hi Pgenie
How do you do that ? I would like to use one computer for both my Tungsten E (which i am giving to my son), and the Tungsten T/X (which has just arrived and is still in its box). Of course my T/X will have a different user name.
Thanks for any advice.

If you are giving the T|E to your son, sync it one last time then hard reset it. Follow Palm's Upgrade directions (linked earlier) and keep your existing Hotsync name for the TX. Your son can then add a bit of data to the PIMs, sync to his new hotsync name (it will ask when you sync). You will need to reinstall Documents to Go and the Calculator from the T|E CD if your son wants these applications.

I upgraded from a T|E to a T|X, great choice. Keep the hotsync ID, I have yet to meet a program that doesn't register (tried: warfare incorporated, teal paint, and more). Good luck, be sure to test apps 1 by 1. Hope you like your T|X!

Hi P.Kitty
Whoops, did the whole thing without reading your posting. Changed my T/X (Dream machine) Hotsync ID and left the old one on the TE.
Thanks for advice anyway.

Hey P. Kitty,
It's flowerinameadow from TapTarget forums :D While we're talking about software transfer to a new TX... So how does iSpin do on the TX? Did you have any trouble transferring registration? I'm upgrading my T3 to a TX and don't want to loose my iSpin.

iSpin works great, (1.6). Don't change your hotsync ID, you'll have to email everyone if you do

I do have to say that in some cases, developers actually let you update your device without problems. That is-at last if you dont update once a month-valid at Tamoggemon's at least(BinaryClock, Autosync mybe??;), but AFAIK, most other developes handle it in a similar fashion.
Anyways, I would get a different hotsync name to avoid problems if you sync both boxen...
