keyboard remap?

1. Is there a way to remap the keyboard, e.g., to make the TAB key into a command key or something like that?

2. Has anyone noticed that pEdit can't take the TAB key as an ESC key? pEdit's author thinks it's because I've got the TAB key remapped in some way, but I don't know how that could have happened.

That would be nice, but I have no idea if it is possible. I would think not. But could someone tell me what the "alt" key is for?
