View Full Version : I have an NR, should I buy NX?

I'm 14 years old, and I have an NR. I took me several months of working my butt off to earn this thing. Is it worth earning the money to get an NX? I could sell my NR on eBay and get maybe a $200 bucks. (as it is half a year used) I paid $380 with shipping for a brand new NR on eBay right after it came out. I was a pretty nice deal, when they were selling them at Best Buy for $500 buck plus shipping. A camera on a clie is appealing to me, but I also have a digital camera, so should I be content? Should a kid my age not worry about such things and save for a car, or college? The problem with waiting until the NX price goes down, mean I won't get as much for my NR either. Sorry if I'm overloading you guys with too much personal information, but any suggestions?

Get the NX-60.Its cheaper and if you already have the camera you wont need another.

Not that your advice isn't good Rick, but I was looking for an older person's advice. You and I probably would go for it instantly, but I just wanted to see what other people think I should do. But thx.

But is it worth it to have a camera on your clie?

I would've said no even a week back.
But with the CF drivers and MS Pros, it's pretty tempting

Do you want a faster processor, os5, a slightly better camera and MSPro functionality? --Edit-- Oh yea and Wifi and CF.
It all comes down to, do you need the extra features based on what you can easily afford. If you like the nr70 and it would a hassle to earn the money for an nx is it worth it? I like the nx, but I admit that some of the features are more of a luxury rather than a neccessity. Although I could never go back to slower processor (coming from 33Mhz) or low res screen.
> Is it worth it to have a camera on you Clie?
I don't use it for high quality pics, but I use it at work or just around to take a quick picture and pass it around. I find it convenient to just happen to have a camera around with me.
Off-topic rant
I am one those people that when I see a highschool kid in my neihbourhood with a brand new car, cell phone and pda I always think where the f*** did you get all that from. Its nice to hear that you worked hard to earn your nr.

NRBoy...I understand your dilemmal. I have an NX70 and am thinking of an NZ90. If I decide to buy, I would consider selling mine to you, in brand new condition.
I purchased mine at Best Buy with the service plan and I've recently noticed that I've lost a pixel. So BB might give me a brand new one in return for this one. In that case if I decide to sell and you to buy, you would get a brand new one....and I would give you all the details so you could get the $60 two year service plan.
Let me know if you're interested, and the rest of you give some feedback at what would be a fair price for such a deal.
Good luck in your search.

I say go and get it. I just wish I had one...
Well, if you don't mind refurbished, you can get a NX70v for $399 from Overstock (http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2.cgi?PAGE=PROFRAME&PROD_ID=220332)

I have an NR too, the NX is lookign nice, especially with PRO support, and CF drivers, but, it'd be expensive, also remember, you'd have to buy CF cards and PRO sticks to use, which would be even more expensive.
Maybe if you are a workaholic and can keep up with school, work to get the money and enjoy the reward, but the NR is still quite nice and would help you save money.
And ask yourself before you get an NX, what would u REALLY need of its features compared to the NR.

Just to clarify, the service plan is included with the palm, you don't have to pay for it.

It's never too early to start saving money for the future. Maybe you should save half of your money for college and use the other half to buy new Clie's.
If you buy a NX70 now you may be able to get a good deal, but it is already somewhat old and when the next new model comes out you will want to upgrade again. So if you hold out and keep your NR for a while, by the time the next multimedia Clie comes out you may have saved enough money to buy that one.

I had an NR and I returned it and got the NX. Here are the good points I found with the NX that the NR does not have:
-Faster processor (better games now and in the future)
-OS5 (some apps/games are OS5 only, and it's only going to get more like that)
-Good camera (I have a 3.3mpx cam, but I never carry it with me on my daily commute. The NX is always with me. So it has a great advantage of always being there)
Other than that, I have to say, the rest is pretty much the same than the NR.
Hope this helps :)

BTW, don't forget, there will be some new models coming out soon from Sony. A good indicator is when Sony drops the price of an existing model. It's hard to believe that I have had my NX for 6 months now.

I'm personally holding out upgrading my NR until I can get at least 32mb of RAM in addition to the new features of the NZ, but a more compact form.

NR70boy, just wondering, but what do you do for a living?
Earning your own NR70v at 14 is pretty impressive to me. I didn't get my first job til I was about 17. Heck a 14yr old owning a pda is pretty impressive to me.

Hi NR70BOY,
yeah, that's pretty impressing, a 14 year old earning enough money to buy a NR70. :) Let me think about what I did at that age... oh... I remember... I worked my butt off to buy a used Super8 movie camera. ;)
I think it was much easier to be a Gadgeteer 20/30 years ago because companies didn't throw new products on the market with such a high speed as today. Especially with SONY it is amazing how innovative they are.
I have been using the NR70 since it came out here in Germany and I am very satisfied with it. I think it is the most stylish and powerful PDA of it's time. Several weeks ago I bought the NX70 but I haven't really switched to the new device yet. Some of the apps I bought for the NR70 don't work on the NX70 and the CF drivers are not available yet. It is true that it is faster than the NR70 but the OS5 also seems to eat more resources and therefore I think the increase in speed is not as significant as I expected.
With the CF slot the NX70 is thicker than the NR70 and the surface is not polished. The CF slot also restricts the angle of movement of the built-in camera. And on the NX70 you just have 11MB of internal memory available, compared with 16MB on the NR70.
So from an aesthetic and ergonomic point of view I would say that the NR70 is superior to the NX70.
Having said all that and given the fact that you would have to work hard to get the NX70, I would recommend that you keep the NR70 and wait and see. I am sure SONY will have some more surprises for us in the future. :)

We live a little bit out in the country, and have 5 acres of land, so we have one of those riding lawn mowers. The people next to our house have about 3 acres. I mowed their lawn for about $70. It took me 3 hours and I didn't wear sunscreen, but it was worth the money. :) Other than that, I'm a real big saver. I get $5 a week allowance, and I save as much of that as my spedning side will allow. My digital camera was $250 and I had to work pretty hard to get that. But I got around my birthday, so I just saved my birthday money and added my own to get that. But I'm not sorry I got it...I've already taken about 2050 pictures within around a year. After all you guys have said, I think I'm gonna be content. I still haven't seen a kid who has a better pda than I do in the past half year or so. So I guess I'm pretty lucky. Thx guys
