View Full Version : NR-70 to cell phone connectivity question
I have a NR-70 and and Motorola v60. If I buy the cable that connects the two am I right to understand that I can dial my local ISP and surf on my NR-70. The reason I ask is because I have 3000 minutes on the weekends , does that mean I can surf for hours with no pay except for losing minutes????
Any help would be appreciated
Actually, that depends on your cell phone plan. Some services, like AT&T don't allow data connections over their voice plan, requiring you to purchase their GSM/GPRS plan. So check that first.
Is anyone familiar with verizon wireless and their policy regarding this?
I just contacted verison wireless and to answer my own question there is no charge to use data over their voice lines, So I will be surfing away!!!!

If I may ask, where did you get your cable from and how much was it? I've been debating on going the route of the connected Clie for a little while now.

I've bought cables to connect my last two PDAs to my cell phone from http://thesupplynet.com/ I've had no problems with either cable and will probably do business with them again if I ever decide to replace my NR70V.

Thanks Rich ...............yeah already got it from there. To be hosest I don't know where else you could buy them I got the one for the Motorola 60I 39.95
My reply made no sense..............again let me say. I bought my cable at supplynet.com and paid $39.99 for it. I have never purchased one before so I assume that is a decent price.
I purchased the one for the Motorola 60i (c)
Ok that's better
I use the same connection (nr70v---v60) via verizon...good stuff, quick email (make sure to use their smtp mail.airbridge.net), slow web surfing...but that's a palm you're holding. Nice to sync avantgo on the fly.

Question: I have Verizon with the T720 (same cable as v60) and NR70.
I don't have my own local ISP, I use SBC Ameritech DSL in my office and have a separate stand-alone email acct. So what would I dial up to with no dialup acct? I'd like to ck email, sync Avantgo, and minimal browsing. I'm kinda lost.

Actually, you don't need an ISP if you have Verizon as your wireless provider. You connect to the net using Verizon and the only cost is that it uses airtime. No other costs. You DO NOT need to subscribe to "Wireless Web" to do this. "Wireless Web" is to get wireless data service on your phone (which is different). Actually, if you don't have an ISP, Verizon is the best service to have because it is the only service that gives you access to an SMTP server for outgoing mail (See previous post regarding "airbridge" smtp server. Otherwise, you wouldn't be able to send outgoing email through yoru DSL smtp server.
When you buy your cable for www.thesupplynet.com (http://www.thesupplynet.com), you'll get great, detailed directions on how to configure everything for Verizon. See http://www.thesupplynet.com/drivers.cfm for Verizon instructions pdf files.
I've been using the SupplyNet cables with various PalmOS pdas and various phones for several years now over the Verizon network and have found this combination to dramatically increase the utility of my PDA.
Have fun.

OOPS.,..I'm "Unregistered" above...forgot to login.
Anyways, great. I'm going to that link to order the cable right now. It's gonna be great to have access on the road...look up phone #'s and other useful info I can use on the fly, and to send/rcv email...that will be a big plus.
So we're all agreed that Verizon doesn't charge for "data" or any hidden charges for this setup...just airtime or weekend minutes?
Thanks for the info.

I jumped to the Verizon site to check out their calling plans and noted that they have a separate set of plans for what they call "Express Network" Does anyone know if *this* is the data service in question, or can a person w/ their "Local DigitalChoice" plan still connect?
sralmas, I suppose another way to ask is what plan are you on that allows what I'd like to have set up to work?
Thanks again for the info!

I have Verizon DSL and as an added feature I have regualr Dial service for $8.00 extra for 20 hours a month of dial up service.
I use the dial-up service to link my clie to my nokia cell phone via the IR port with no problem.
Verizon dial up works fine as an internet connection for my Clie and cell phone.
I have tried others like Juno and MSN, their dial-ups do not work for this application.

If I didn't get a deal on my SprintPCS service, I would probably switch to Verizon for the better data service. I get double billed for minutes for web access and have no SMTP server. I am able to get around the SMTP server issue because of a dial-up account I have. The key problem, though, is that PCS stands for Pretty Crappy Signal.

Just another follow-up to this subject. I'm currently on AT&T and called their customer service to get details on their PDA-to-phone policies. I described to the rep what I wished to do; the rep let me know that it could be done, and for my phone in particular it would need a modem attachment that would then connect w/ the Clie. Supposedly this type of moden should be available at retail electronics stores such as Circuit City. Or I could see what a local AT&T vendor had. (I'm on one of AT&T's plans that has the PocketNet Service on it, using the Ericsson. . . can't remember the model #).
Then the magic question: I told the rep that I'd heard AT&T charges for the amount of data transferred. After checking w/ a supervisor, I was told that this wasn't the case, and that it would log as regular minutes.
So now I am intrigued. I'm tempted to track one of these modems down and see how the connected-PDA service is through AT&T. If anyone else has tried this, please let me know. The only thing that bothers me is that I seem to remember recently checking out AT&T's site and thought that there was indication that they would charge extra for data xfer. Will report if this works and the results, or if someone already has, please let us know!
Kev!

I'm using SprintPCS and do not get double-billed for minutes for web access. I do not use their smtp server for email (I use my own) and generally have no problem with signal strength. I have found their 3G service to be quite reliable.
I have heard that Sprint has problems in certain parts of the country so maybe that's where the problem lies for you.
I'm having enormous problems with Sprint. I've been using a demo of Xiino (don't know if that matters), a NR70V, a cable to by LG 3550(? - not right here to check) phone, and the settings posted by someone else on this board earlier.
The problem is that it disconnects after about 7-10 seconds. It doesn't even finish downloading web pages, though I can usually get the header.
Is this Xiino? Sprint won't discuss the matter with me. They don't know anything about handhelds, and have a goofy policy about wanting to keep unlimited data free but not wanting people to use it as a primary modem, so they keep it free but refuse to help anyone set their system up (my impression, at least).
Thoughts, anyone? Someone want to PM me and talk me through the settings? I can post details if someone wants to help me.
Thanks SO much,
Aym

I tried Xiino when I first connected my NR to my LG5350 phone using the cable from Supply Net. I was never able to get it to work properly. I'm using Blazer now, which is free for Sprint customers. You may have to hunt around Sprint's website to find it.
I used the settings posted elsewhere to set mine up, just as you did. (The settings were posted before the big crash but I think somebody reposted them.)
Sorry I can't be of more help

I use Sprint, NR70V, and LG5350, and haven't had much trouble using Xiino (demo) with their Vision service. The connection does seem to timeout quickly, which is sometimes a problem (for me more often with e-mail) but once it starts connecting, it usually stays connected, and I've downloaded hundreds of K at a time. I guess that's not very helpful, since I don't know how to fix your problem, but I just thought I'd say that it works for me.
BTW, I've had much more trouble with Blazer than Xiino. It hangs a lot, and weirdly sometimes refuses to download a whole page; it stops in the middle and says it's finished. I find it odd that others have, like you, reported the reverse, and swear by Blazer and swear at Xiino. It's curious, but I have no explaination.
