Hi everyone, just wondering what you can do with a SL 10. I'm thinking of getting it for a friend, and want to see if it's sth he might want. Thanks!

My wife uses an old Visor Neo (monochrome). She uses it to keep her schedule and mine plus keep track of our sons shots and medical info, also plays a few games (not many are mono friendly). There are still alot of use in these devices, they are just not too flashy.

I use my SJ20 to:

1. replace Post-it memo
2. to take notes for my work and during lecture
3. replace dictionary
4. as flash card for learning volcabulary
5. to remember my friend's info e.g. phone no., brithday
6. sysn the phone book with my Siemen S35
7. remember a/c info e.g. bank, email, internet a/c
8. reference database
9. ebook
10. send SMS
11. datebook schedule
12. remember what have to do in future
13. remind me to pay fees
14. record websites address
15. scientific calculator with graphic function
16. shopping list

and more...

enough?

Well, interesting question. It would seem like an old clunker of a Palm to some...

I actually went out and bought one specifically to take on a monthlong trip to Europe. It was the only PDA that met the criteria I was looking for (plus some observations):

1) Non-rechargable/standard batteries (NO WALL WART)
2) Memory card for backups, and documents
3) Small thumb keyboard option
4) Hi-Res display
5) Very long battery life
6) Very small and light
7) Screen readable in bright daylight

I really took a good long look at every PDA out there..Palm or PPC. I think the SL-10 is the best one going right now for my needs, which include:

a) Ebook reader, for travel guides, web pages
b) Language translator
c) Journal
d) Maps (albiet nothing serious here)
e) Address book
f) World clock, other travel uses
g) Games/timewasters

It was very important to have a PDA with me, as Ive used Isilo to grab and compress a ton of travel web sites (you can get the entire Lets Go! library online). I also needed something to use for translations and as a travel diary. That would mean Id need a small keyboard and storage card. Color means poor battery life, so B&W was the choice. I considered the SJ-20 but decided against it because of its reduced battery life, the need to carry a wall wart, and the inability to easily replace the batts when they die.

Using PowerRun and similar utilites negates the need for anything larger than 8 megs. I can easily live with that. The screen backlight is not as good as the SJ-20, but its very visable in decent light, which is where Ill be using it most. The jog dial is a pleasant bonus.

All in all the SL-10 makes for a great travellers PDA. Its light, small, hi-rez, has great battery life, and has enough storage and expansion options to suit a travellers needs.

Oh yeah, I really like the screen covers on these style Clies...you know, the Capt. Kirk style communicator flip cover.

I think they really work well by keeping the screen well protected and easy to get to, and they negate the need for a larger or bulkier case.

Im not too concerned about the exterior of my SL-10. If I scratch it up on the trip, ill buy another one for the next trip :)

I will add that anyone who uses the stylus a lot will need to get a larger replacement. The Sonys are similar to a toothpick ...

than SL-10 is clearly not the best PDA for that. It is near the bottom in fact.

And also, I'd rather bring a cord than bring a box of batteries...

A cord and various plug adapters, you meant.  You may end up carying several adapters depending which countries you're going to.  Continental Europe, UK, Australia, Asia, etc., they are all different.  Your cord may render useless if you don't have the right adapter (been there & done that).  Replaceable batteries are universal and you can get in just about any where, no need to bring a box of batteries.

I use mine for about everything in the above posts :) If it helps, just buy the SJ20, for a little more, it has a rechargeable battery and 16mb of memory.

What good is a PPC if the battery lasts for 2 hrs? I get around 3 weeks of normal use out of an SL-10.

I'd rather play 2 hours of Age of Empires than 24 hours of Bejeweled. Roflmao GG.

You have now mastered "Missing the point" ...

If the original posted had asked about comparisons between the SL-10 and a PPC, Im sure your comments would be appreciated.

PS - My Dell Axim is staying at home for this trip.

I had not previously said anything about a PPC until you said that.

Hey, if you don't mind the green backlight and 8MB of RAM, I'd choose the SL10. It is really nothing special, but it is a very well built PDA. It doesn't have many (if any) multimedia features but if you aren't worried then I would consider it. Now, getting a SL10 will be the hard part because it is officially discontinued and you will have to look hard to find it in retail. Your best bet is to look for it online at stores like Overstock.com and other places. I remember seeing a returned open-box one at BB for under $100.

When I was looking for a low-end model two months ago, the SL10 was already discontinued and all I could get was an open box SJ20. Now there is the SJ22 which is a good buy for a color Palm unit at $200. You may say you don't want color, but until you've used a color PDA you won't go back to monochrome.

oh yah? I have the NR70V but I went to get the discontinued SL10 after that ;) Monochrome (more specifically, an AAA-powered PDA) still has its advantages in terms of portability and reliability away from home. I'm assuming most people don't do alot of lenghty trips so that's why everyone's hooked to color. Try taking a trip in France or Britain for a month with your color PDA, you'll need to bring along adapters for your color PDA and you can't swap power supplies when it runs low.

Ok, substitute "PPC" above with any other color, rechargeable PDA of your choice.

You must've heard my point whoosh by your head .. Aside from being oblivious to the obvious youre a rank ameteur flamer to boot.

[ignore flamer mode on]

Im off to Europe with my SL-10 today. Ill let ya'll know how it works out. I'm bringing the small Sony thumb keyboard along..havent used it much yet, but I really hate the spacebar location. We will see how it goes. Im loaded up with over 100 megs of Isilo'd travel web pages, as well as a few choice ebooks, and a few dozen games. Also installed DayNotez for journaling..the program seems pretty great.

Agreed. I've got plenty of color PDA's to choose from, including an Axim and a Zaurus SL-5500. Just needed something to go the distance with me, as I have no idea how long ill be away from a power outlet for any stretch of time. Once im back, its back to the glorious splendor of color for me :)

Hey petersiu007 -

For what it's worth, I saw a few of these for Sale here in Seattle yesterday for $66 bucks. Color or no color, can't go wrong with that! :)

Well, since I have the color one already, for a long trip, I put together a 4 AA battery pack (you can get the case fron RadioShack for less than $2.), hookup the + and - wire to the right pin in the Clie charger serial plug end, and that's it.  Now I don't have to worry about running out of juice in places where there is no AC access like long plane trip or hiking in the woods for days.  Although that is not as convenient as yours, but I see colors which help a lot when you look at pictures and maps.
