I am quite happy to have just purchased a brand new VZ-90 for 47,000 YEN (Ex-Demo in Osaka. Akihabara wanted 69,000 YEN)
The OLED screen quality is really amazing. I upgraded from my NZ-90 which has worked brilliantly for me so far (Except for crashes caused by hacks which i had to install to make the NZ-90 usable) Words cannot describe the magnifiance of the OLED screen its everything that people have been saying about it.
However, problem with the Vz-90 is i currently overclock my NZ-90 to 135MHZ BUS 266MHZ CPU Speed to use TCPMP Media Player. This allows me to run divx files at full speed using 480x280, 22khz ADPCM, 30FPS, 768kbit DIVX3. (I haven`t and any problems so far besides a increase in battery usage)
Even through the VZ-90 has 2D acceleration the 123MHZ Cpu is really struggling compared to the NZ-90 default 200Mhz. I realise this may damage the system )Any potentially void my one year warrenty)
Does anybody know of another application that will let me overclock the CPU/BUS other than lightspeed?
If i can overclock the VZ-90 then it will truly make it worth me make the transition completely over from the NZ-90 to the VZ-90.
Any help appreicated. For any NZ-90 users i am happy to help with any questions after having been using it for about 2 years now.
Thanks

I have had my PAlm IIIC overclocked by 25% for over a year. If the handheld dosnt crash after a two hour movie, it prolly never will(unless environment temperature raises much).

The VZ-90 uses the HHE processor. It is designed for low speed running, and having a good battery life. Of course, it burns alot more battery than its siblings, which is why the battery is so huge. That said, there are no real ways to overclock it (that I can tell you :)). There are two clocking programs released by Tyler Faux, and by Dmitry Grinberg. These allow you to control the speed, but still not overclock beyond the standard levels.

are you using the latest version of tcpmp? it have a special plugin that support the vz/ux/th hhe processor.
get the latest stable version here (http://picard.exceed.hu/tcpmp/) , or the latest test version here (http://picard.exceed.hu/tcpmp/test/)
I know my UX use to run video really smooth at 30fps. The VZ is suppose to be even more robust. I guess if your running .mp4 or .mov files you can push it but with other files and TCPMP it runs a bit slower and may appear to be struggling. Of course, if your collection is already in a format its a pain to convert to another. I, thankfully, already have most of my videos in .mov or .mp4 with a bunch of VR files in .mqv. Try converting to .mp4 and running through Media launcher and compare results with your current video and running with TCPMP. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

hhe cannot be overclocked because from what ive heard, it can be overclcoked to 150mhz but it becomes very unstable

I don't think he has the HHE Processor TCPMP plugin.... ;)
I still say try and use the same file converted to a supported Media Launcher codec and play it. I'm sure it will run smoother than even TCPMP with the HHE support. Though, the HHE support with the TCPMP is much better than without.

Much much better :D

Ahh Yeap. I have the HHE TCPMP plugin installed and selected the SONY 2D acceleration video driver. It smooths out the video when streached now which makes it much better but its still stuggling. Turning on dither or using the standard driver brings massive slowdown.
I haven`t purchased a laptop here yet so i can`t install image convertor 2 and try MP4 High Res Files. It sounds like i will get much better speed that way so i will try switch over to that. I did actually get a slight performance boost using MP4 on the NZ-90 as well. Maybe it has some hardware assitance in the model.
Currently the only DIVX file i can get full speed on is the GITS 2ND episodes i have encoded in 480x272, 23,976FPS, 768KBIT ,Divx3, 22khz Stereo IMAPCM.
I get around 106% speed on benchmarks so that will make the Vz-90 excellent for watching anime. The colours are very vivid and in audio is in crisp stereo. I don`t even need to use the saturation control in TCPMP!
One thing i noticed with the VZ-90 is that the speakers are much much loader than the NZ-90. to get the same volume on the VZ90 as the NZ90 i have to lower the volume on TCPMP to 25%. It`s that loud, but still clear.
I allready put the Vz-90 to use and its handling applications such as Documents to Go (I can actually see the images in PDF files now), Resco Viewer and Pocket Tunes much faster with the 7meg Dynamic Ram and 40 meg internal.
A major bouns is the ability to input both japanese and english. It support Hiragana, Katana and Kanji Input. I am sure i will find the VZ-90 very useful for language study. This means no japanese OS hacks needed and Netfront actually displays the japanese characters rather than a stream of gibberish symbols.
I have spent a while looking at other palm os models (Even Pocket PC) but i couldn`t find a reasonable replacement i liked after being so attached to the SONY CLIE. The lifedrive looked interesting and the TREO 650 but no major improvements that made me want it that bad or even over a PSP, plus the number of crashes i was getting on the Palm OS almost broke my patience. One of the main pulls -> The evil Sony Memory Stick format. I had allready invested a large amount of money in these things and since most of the other Palm Os models didn`t support Memory Sticks i became baised towards products that did. Thus now i have Sony Digital Camera and very close to buying a Sony Vaio because they have inbuilt memory card support. Looks like sony did their customer research well.
I don`t think i need to elaborate too much more on the VZ-90 since there is plenty of other threads that review the VZ-90. Suffice to say if you are Sony Clie user you will love this deivce however they are becoming harder to find.
If you can find it for the price i found it i would recommend buying it.

You don`t happen to know which program they used to overclock to 150mhz do you?
Thanks
So your a new user and there's going to be 3 more real soon. So 4 new VZ owners. I like the idea of exclusivity so I hope more people get the device but not to many. I have yet to hear anything bad about the VZ. Also, do you speak japanese, was this little obstacle easier for you? Is it just something you just want to learn and practice?

I don`t think there will be a problem in terms of exclusivity due to the limited availabilty atm and high price comprartivly to the newer palm models. It not like the VZ-90 became mainstream like the IPOD so i see no harm in encouraging more people to have a closer look at this model.
It`s possible if it had sold well then we may have seen Sony continue the CLIE range.
Bad points regarding the VZ-90 (Most have been mentioned on this forum)
- Slow CPU (127Mhz Max)
- Still Expensive
- Discontinued Model, Sony Clie Range
- Not readly available in many shops. I really had to search to find a shop that still had stock in Akihabara and Osaka.
- No Hardware Keyboard. I havent tried my Targus IR keyboard on it yet.
- Most of the GUI is in Japanese but a english patch is available.
- Apprently the the OLED Screen has a short lifespan.
- It uses Palm OS. Not saying it bad but it is limited in functionality if you want to try and use it as a laptop replacement.
My Japanese is very basic atm. Enough to get me around converse in a basic manner, same with my Hiragana, Katakana. Kanji looks to require major investment of time. Not being able to communicate and read in the local language fluently can be very frustrating, there is english next to most signs however i like playing a lot of the newest japanese console games which rarely have english subtitle support.

I could counter these with
-Achieves 30fps on video which is dificult no matter the processor, all most users will need
-Cheaper by count of the VZ new, can still be expensive to most though
-All are discontinued so...
-Adds to the exclusivity
-Not every PDA user needs a keyboard so can be good or bad
-Avid Clie users should be fine
-Short life span if 2-5 year of continuous usage is short, should be plenty long under regular usage
-Laptop replacement it can be with full internet access, MP3 player, Video player, removable memory, DTG, and plenty more. Palm OS is a matter of preference as the UX was my laptop for over a year.
I know you meant no harm. I just wanted to give the counter to the negative points as to show that all of them are not necessarily bad but are just a matter of personal preference. I would say the positives far out weigh any negative in this device. At least from specs, I'll find out next Tuesday for sure.

Thats ok. I only brought up bad points about the VZ-90 since it was asked offhand, of these were my buying considerations so different people will take different points into weight or not at all.
