Removing the Alerts from the Status Bar

Does anyone know how to remove the Alerts from the status bar and replace it with something more useful?

Don't know how to do this, but I had a simpler question:
How do you create alerts? Maybe this sounds stupid, but don't have a clue where to enter them.

if you put a reminder in an appointment, you will get an alert when and after the reminder flashes on you, and will stay until you open the appointment and dismiss it.

Oh yes, so it's just an alarm that you have to set. I see now.
Reminder, appointment, alert, alarm, ... things got messed up over here.
