Instead of starting too many threads on this (we're all interested ;) ), just use this one to post your progress.
Now, where are you exactly (I mean speaking of progress :) )? Can you sum up what's done and not?
Have you got your replacement drive from Hitachi (if I remember)? If I remember, you put it inside, hard reset and it did not work right?
Have you tried putting a CF flash inside?
What's with the old drive? was it spinning? What was the LD behaviour before you ripped it off? If you put the old drive in a CF card reader, any luck? With Partition magic for example? Can you get info on partitions?

ok well the latest drive has been eaten by the ld as for how to partition it that i havent figured out maybe i could get a ghost image of the first 2 partitions the 64meg and the 2nd 22 meg system hiden partition i have....as for the other questions i have tred all of those im told that without the partitions nothing will work....as for the cf card it might work if i could partition it 64/22/??? the system needs the info of the second partition to actualy work....before i sent the other drive bact i could see all thepartitions in aprogram called ontrack also im told by some that way to really partition the drive is thru linux i have not tried that ...the system was locked up before i disected it removed the drive and tried to acess it in windows....any other questions...comments....i have tried all of the disk partitioning software i could think off...in windows...however i think maybe in the linux community there a a bit more tricks...

Wow now i'm puzzled. That'd mean that the 1st 2 partitions are linux filesystem, but the 3rd one, is standard FAT ??... There is no way we could use the LD in drive mode if all partitions are linux.
Now my guess is
1) the 64mb partition acts as main memory.
2) that 22 mb partition acts as ROM
3) the rest acts as the stadard HD.
@Eno
The partition are only logical "fragmentation" or "splits" of the drive. You'd have to unplug the drive, put it in Windows PC and read it with a software like partition magic.
If you manage to do this, post a screenshot of what it looks like in Partition magic or another GUI partition software.
When you get there, then I use a soft called DriveImage (same publisher - quest software) to make an image of all the partitions.
Now I know my way in computers, but can a flash card be partitioned  ? The microdrive is a mini harddrive so we see it's "partitionable"...

i dont think those 2 partitions are linux however i think the drive is going tho have to be manipulated thru linux Microdrives should be able to be partitioned however i havent been able to figue out how pm8 dosent see it .......so i dont know i have to try something ..maybe thru dos...im only guesing so if anyone has any ideas please id love to hear them

IMO thru DOS it will be worse than PM8.
Do you still have your old disk?
What PM8 sees on this drive? Does the drive still spins?
And on the new disk?
What PM8 sees?
Can you make screen shots, host on photobucket and post here?

Ok, you can access the new drive in a CF card reader but PM8 won't see the drive at all?? Do you use WinXP pro? If you go into the disk manager in your control panels ( under admin tools), can you see something? I tried with my SD card and can see my FAT partition!

Returning it for service is the way to go.

The LifeDrive has two partitions.
The first partition invisible partition is ~68MB (FAT16). It is invisible to regular tools (including DriveMode). This is where the PDA stores the regular storage heap (which is cached in the ~13MB DBCache RAM). There is no (easy) way to export it or defrag it (because it is hidden/invisible)
The data partition is the one you see. ~4GB (FAT32). It is visible to all the regular tools. You can mount it using DriveMode and use the regular Windows tools to "chkdsk" and "defrag" it.
re: Partition tools
Regular tools like Partition Magic will not work because it only exports the one 4GB data volume/partition (not the entire hard disk). If you take out the hard disk, and connect it directly to a computer (direct ATA to CF) you can read the partition table. It has many non-standard settings, so I don't recommend trying to change it. (BTW: there is a 22MB blank space between the two partitions)

The first partition invisible partition is ~68MB (FAT16). It is invisible to regular tools (including DriveMode).
Of interest, but does not help much with the problem at hand: The latest version of FileZ has an option, "Show Hidden Volumes", that when enabled will allow one to explore this partition. To FileZ, this partition appears to be FAT, is a representation of "Internal", but is called "External Card".
