View Full Version : Tungsten T3 goes boom!

So I eBayed myself a T3 recently since I heard so much wonderful stuff about it, and out of the box the device was awesome. Fast forward a week, and it's crashing at random times and whenever I put it on a cradle (or take it out from a cradle).

What's up? I hard resetted the thing a few times and started over, but after installing some programs it goes boom. I've tried to see which program might've caused it, but it seems like a different program each time, and after uninstalling all programs it still crashes and I end up having to hard reset again.

Ai ya...is there like a Palm diagnostic tool or something or a ScanDisk thing for my T3? I don't think it's a hardware problem.

Any help would be appreciated. :)

Eh?

What's that? I have finals for the next few days so I won't be playing around with that yet, but I'm curious to know what that is and what it does.

+kardboard+, Brayder Technology's most excellent "Jack Flash" and "Jack Sprat" utilities ARE NOT compatible with the Tungsen product line. I bet these are your problem.

I have a T3 with Jacksprat and Jackflash installed. Both are compatible with the T3 per the Brayder website and in my experience. However, I have occassional issues with Jacksprat, but only when I'm using that app. Otherwise, everything functions just fine with these two apps installed.

That being said, what sometimes happens is that apps moved with Jackflash into the flash memory don't work so well in Flash. These apps will stay on the T3 even after a hard reset if they've been moved into flash. That may be the source of your problem. If you're familiar with Jackflash, I'd open it up and see what's been moved into flash memory. You may be able to move something into ROM which will solve your problem. BE VERY CAREFUL with Jackflash and Jacksprat. They are compatible with the T3, but they are still tempermental apps. Try looking through the support section on Brayder's website.

I found problems with Docs to Go in ROM.
Best course of action is to open JackFlash, select "Apps in Flash" (top right hand corner) & move all to RAM. Then start moving one at a time back into Flash to see where problem lies

Since DocsToGo has so many parts, and since it is "something different each time" that is making you reset, it could be DocsToGo :)
Where is it? Flash or RAM? :)

Hmm, my Docs to Go IS in Flash, maybe that's why. I'll try to put everything back in RAM and move them one by one. Thanks! We'll see if this fixes things.

Edit: OK, so I moved everything to RAM now, and it's STILL crashing. Plug it into the cradle, crash. Try to exit Kinoma, crash. Try to load Bike or Die!, crash.

haha this sucks.

Now that you've moved everything to RAM try hard reset...? After backing up of course. Then restore everything one at a time. It almost sounds like it's a hardware problem rather than software.

OK, here's the plan. I'm going to restore the original ROM then hard reset one more time. I, however, have found problems with two versions of DocsToGo and Kinoma (i.e. original ones in ROM and newer versions in RAM) so I usually use JackSprat to get rid of those. Then restore my data, and one by one putting things back. Or should I not touch my ROM at all?

I think restore everyhting to original factory configuration, then hard reset (after backing up all apps you wanna keep). See how it works, then start restoring apps to see which one's causing the problems (that is if it works right after the hard reset). I had problems (though nothing like yours) when I tried to run Docs to Go with an older version in flash and newer in RAM. I don't use Kinoma so not sure about that one.

I HUMBLY STAND CORRECTED! I should have read further than Brayder's "compatible with..." screen.

Funny thing is, the thing I love about the T3 is...it's stability. (Almost) never hangs....

hahha everything is fixed now. I found the problem:

It's the colour depth setting.

I had it set to 16-bit in Colorize, and after I noticed that my DIA skin looked really funky after warm resets, I thought I would check it out. So now it's in 8-bit unless an application turns it to 16 for it's own use, and all the crashes are gone! Hurray!!

Congratulations! Glad to hear it was something simple.

Glad to know all is now well, but you mentioned in your first post that the crashes came "whenever I put it on a cradle (or take it out from a cradle)"

There might also be a physical problem here. My T3 was randomly crashing and hard resetting. I was completely puzzled until I realized that on my crowded desk there was not enough room between my monitor and the cradle to vertically insert the T3. I was inadvertantly rocking the T3 so that the cradle connectors on the right or left made first contact with the T3. That was crashing it. Once I rearranged the desk so that the cradle is away from the monitor and I can set the T3 in without rocking it - no more crashes!

That's good to know, thanks.

I've always had room to insert it properly, and no matter what I do to it now, it doesn't crash. :)

I once had such a thing on my T3 as well. Inserted it into a cradle(actually, a friend did) and BOOM. All data gone. Lovely!

Anyways, congrats on solving your problem! Have good sucess with your T3(mine currently is without data, hardrset and no backup in vacation house;)).
