I ask such a question because as I went to CompUSA to check out the handheld section, I looked over into the laptop section and saw small laptop which is apart of Sony's TX-series. Interesting name seeing as the TH and UX devices come together to form the name. Anyway, as I used it, I noticed the black border around the screen, the cylinder-like screen base, the WiFi-BT connectivity, small-size, and grey-flat keyboard. It costs $2099. But just want to know your input on this laptop.

Its the evolution of the sony T series of laptops. They've always been small and portable. No one has ever even remotely compared them to clies as that distinction was left to the U series which were very small and very PDA like. Anyway, its a good small and portable laptop that is just way out of the price range of anyone looking for a PDA that could be a laptop. My fiance uses a Euro NX73 with bluetooth to connect to the interent anywhere, a KB100 for typing with DTG, and a 1gb memory stick for files and music. She also has the gamepad so it really is a laptop replacement for her covering office, internet, music, and gaming. The TX series is awesome, but its also $2000 awesome versus less then $400 for a laptop replacing PDA setup. We use my Powerbook for other things so I guess you can never truly completely replace the computer but.....

It does look like a UX40... ;)
And it looks nice, too. But it is Windows, I can't go back to Windows :D
(And expensive  I would rather get a PowerBook )

Ditto, Powerbook user of 2 years. Never expierenced OS9 only the great OS X so I love Apple. I also hate Windows which is why I would like to stay with Palm. I just posted asking if you can make a PPC look like a mac in the UX forum too. If you could get the HTC looking like a mac or put OS X on the TX then my interest is peaked. If you can't then I'll completely satisfied with my PB and Clie's. You must admit the specs on these to Windows products are impressive even if the OS's aren't exactly.....

I don't have a PowerBook, just an iBook ;)
I experienced OS9, not for a long time, though. :)
Then in a box came the Mac OS X upgrade
And about 3 years ago, my school was using Mac OS 8
Now at my new school XP  ;)

If I get a Mac, it will be an Intel Mac. Otherwise its Windows. Saw an HP at CompUSA today that I liked. Had an MS Pro/SD/MMC slot. :) was $1,200

There were rumors that Apple wooed VAIO designers for a project -- probably for the MacIntel machines. I hope it's true: the elegance of OS X + the elegance of VAIO design... that's something!

But isn't the VAIO brand set for Windows OSes? Sony and Mac? That would be something as well as Intel processors. But with these benefits, the costs automatically shoots up into the high $ range.

Mac users are long accustomed to paying well over the odds for a new computer :D
That's why I snapped up my Powerbook last January - a mere £599!!!

I think it's great that Mac if finally dead! It's about time. I've got a G5, all it does is sit here and play MP3s. My dual-proc Xeons run circles around it, and for graphics, my old SGI 540 workstation with a Cobalt chipset smokes it in Photoshop.

PowerPCs are such a pain to maintain. And, my VAIO's look better than any Mac design, ever. Not starting one of them "Mac VS PC's" arguements, just saying that it's been long overdue.

That is why Apple is switching to Intel, PowerPC sucks and Apple knows it ;)

Mac was being too proprietary and that's why Windows shot past them. Amazing they are realizing their mistake now.

G4 was made by Motorola, then IBM made G5, and Intel makes G6? (I hope they don't use something already out, they need to take Microsofts Intel and make everything they are Apple now ;))

Look, its not "Microsofts Intel". All it means is that apple is switching from the horrid architecture that they shouldn't have used in the first place. x86 isn't any better though, Alpha all the way baby :D (Sorry, we're a DEC family here :) )

Apple computers are a different breed. I personally will not touch one, and I think their forced proprietary hardware is a stupid idea. Oooh ahh, its shiny, lets mark it up 45%. Give me a good old alpha box, or hell, i like x86 for everday stuff too. Apple reminds me of Sony, with a case of the design addiction.

Mac OS X is the big thing. It is much more stable and elegant than Windows. It is also easier to use. I used both, I am a switcher. ;)

And it feels good not to have to worry about my Mac... ;)

I have had a Sony VAIO T350P laptop for about 6 months now and I just love it! It's lightweight about 3# and it's small size 8x10 make it VERY portable.
The battery life is fantastic, I get about 6 hours a session. The processor is a little sluggish, but the battery life more than makes up for it. It has blue tooth so I can sync my clie wirelessly. It can utilize the Cingular wireless WAN network. The keyboard is very comfortable to use. The speakers seem a little tinney. Yes, it was expensive, but so was my UX50, and it too was worth it. The VAIO will never replace my CLIE, but it is a great little laptop! I was excited to see your thread about this neat little computer.

 NITA

There's a little to much mac bashing going around here. Powerbooks cost the same as vaios so stop whining about pricing. I was looking at a S series and the price for the specs of my powerbook were more than the apple so.... Also, the G5 PowerMacs have had very good performance specs so if all somebody is using it for is mp3 playing then their just missing out. Also, the switch to intel is going to be great for the simple fact that intel is going to give apple what they want and when they want. IBM had a great chip, obviously as all three next gen consoles of video games are using them, but they didn't care about apple's needs and screwed them over. Intel is going to invest the time and R&D to give apple the edge in performance and simplicity over any PC.

Apple and Sony design have always been at the forefront. Since apple has hired some sony guys and is going to be using intel, I see apple taking a large chunk out of the market. What's not to love about best performance and desing with simplicity.

P.S. I love my Powerbook and having using apple for just under 2 years I would never go back to PC, even if it is faster. IMHO.

I suspect that the Intel switch is for no reason other than cost cutting. And I'm not Mac bashing, I have a Powerbook and a desktop PC. And I use them both for different things.

If Apple wasn't so expensive, I am sure it would have a wider audience. ;)

Not really true. PC's are so wild and popular that the common person doesn't think of getting an Apple until recently with the Apple craze as people are giving them a look. Also, because PC's are so prevalent they are compatible with everything. Apple's are not compatible with everything but are compatible with most of what people use. But, the notion that Apple is not compatible with everything scares people. Also, if a person is using a PC at their work space, they are more likely to just buy what they use at work for home. Also, people like variety and have various preferences. Its why the iPod Mini in so many colors sold so well as well as the colored ibooks and imacs of yore. Someone can build a cusom PC as well as have availablility to 100's of PC's. A person can only buy an OS X computer from Apple so the options of 1 are not enough for the mass population. Also, Apple sells high end computers that when a comparibly equiped PC is brought in comparison, the price difference is not that terrible. Also, you must realize the software value of an Apple with its OS X and iLife. Apps such as iPhoto, iMovie, and iDVD are worth a lot. In the case of the iMac, iBook, and Powerbook I would say that the expense is not a deterant when buying a comparable PC. In the case of the Powermac, yeah, its expensive and a comparable PC could be bought for less.

That's an old school Sony U series I believe. Maybe a U101 or something like that. I believe the UX came after that and from the looks of it owes some of its roots to it.

Why doesn't Apple just buy some Sonys and rebrand them?

Alpha, now that made me laugh. It was a decent chip when it was announced way back when there was still such a thing as DEC.

I'd be keeping an eye on what's going on with the next generation cell processor. Sony/IBM/Toshiba I believe. Just look around you, PCs and laptops are yesterdays devices...think about what's next. Just look to Yahoo and Google....guess what they are trying to size up...

PC was about "personal productivity" initially. Netscape opened it up to be more than personal...with a browser you could interact with the world around you. Now, PDA's were all about "personal productivity", Yahoo and google want these devices to connect you to the world around you. And to do it in a better way than a crappy Netfront browser.

Ask someone from Japan a question, first thing they do is reach for a cell phone and surf the web...just a start folks...just a start....
