Hi all,

To all those TX owners, what would be your wishlist - if and when there is a ROM update for the TX?

Cheers,

Pran

Well, now that the security fix is in, my next request would be to make handedness persistent. I'd also like to see a file association wizard of some sort, and a brightness slider with a wider range (off through to current brightness).

if and when there is a ROM update for the TX?Some one else will have to confirm, but in one document that I read, it said that the TX uses Masked ROM, and not Flash ROM. Thus there will never be a ROM update. Now there may still be further RAM based fixes.

If possible I want a more 3D GUI, something like SkinUI or palmrevolt but stabiler and built into the OS. Also it would be great if the media application could handle many more video formats. Also increased audio quality would be nice. Palm appears as if it wants more media centric devices to me so the above improvements seem somewhat likely.

the TX has a very good audio quality in my view, perhaps you should try a pair of senheisers ;) A new Update should only remove this overall lag which becomes more and more and one can only remove by hardreset. Remembers me at another desktop OS.... mmh, ok there should be update of versamail beside from this. Its a very unstable application when using IMAP!

nothing else!

if the rom is flashable, i wish (if it's a mask rom, still wish a ram-base update)

1. the return of home buttom officially
2. The option of choose between graffti 1 and graffti 2
3. incooperate the auto-lock fix
4. increase the variety of alarm officially
5. have a official over/underclock application as what ppc have

1. Definitely -- maybe putting the Menu button on the Home HB even.
2. Not going to happen -- G2 was in response to a G1 patent issue IIRC
3. yes
4. They should at least be able to let it play WAVs now; a single one-tone midi database is so 1990's.
5. Actually, since it uses an xScale chip, they should just be able to let it take advantage of the chip's built in CPU ramping function. My guess is that they haven't because the screen becomes noisy at low frequencies, and the unit can reset if the frequency goes too low or high. OS5 isn't designed with multi-process timing in mind, and we're already seeing some MultiFinder-like activity happening in the current version.

I've heard that someone found out how to modify the ROM in the Treo by themselves, so they can put in apps they want and remove the ones they don't. Then if they have a hard reset, key stuff is still there.

Would that be possible on the TX, too?

Kory...

Only if it's Flash ROM and not Masked ROM. It's looking like it is Masked from the way the security update was deployed.

Of course, on the TX this isn't as much an issue, as everything is stored in NVRAM, not battery-backed RAM -- if your battery dies, you don't lose your files; you need to intentionally do a hard reset in order to wipe the files. And if you're doing it intentionally, it doesn't take much to do a backup before you reset ;)

The main thing I would like to see fixed is the lag when opening the Web. This wasn't an issue on the T5 so I assume it would not be to hard to fix.

I would also like to see a Blazer that works well with G1. Palm should do it for all of us who use G1. I doubt this will happen, though.

I can't confirm or deny this, but I went through the documents at the fcc and found something interesting.
This one (large pdf) (https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=591090&native_or_pdf=pdf) shows all the IC's built into the TX. In particular there are:
- a 1Mb flash from ST microelectronics (NAND01GW3B2AN6 specs (http://www.st.com/stonline/stappl/productcatalog/app?path=/comp/stcom/PcStComRPNTableView.onClickFromPartNumber&code=91965&subclassid=752&subclassheader=1%20Gbit,%202%20Gbit,%204%20Gbit,%208%20Gbit...))
- a 256Mb dram mobile from Infineon (HYB39L256160AC specs (http://www.ortodoxism.ro/datasheets/infineon/1-DS_256M_LS_33V_2002-_12_20.pdf))
and (surprise)
- a 64Mb strata flash from Intel (28F640J30120 specs (http://download.intel.com/design/flcomp/datashts/29066721.pdf))

So apparently the OS is not in the usual big flash chip but rather on the smaller strata-flash. Since strata flash is based on Nor, the processor can directly access the memory and this might be the reason for a faster boot.

Whether this flash rom can be updated is still unkown, but from a component point of view there seems to be no limitation.

Note: comparing the fcc image with the one taken by dmitry, there seem to be a few differences. For instance the Nand chip is from Samsung (K9F1G08U0A specs (http://www.samsung.com/Products/Semiconductor/NANDFlash/SLC_LargeBlock/1Gbit/K9F1G08U0A/K9F1G08U0A.htm)). As for the other two, it is quite difficult to get the correct model number as the writing on the chips is too blurred or covered by (the really excellent) mods instructions. But the basic characteristics should be the same.
