I was reading an article over on Treo Central regarding building a "custom ROM" for the Treo 650 (http://discuss.treocentral.com/showthread.php?t=97527). I was wondering if it is possible to do the same with any of the ROM's that Palm has brought out for each individual product line. More specifically, I have been thinking of trying this on my Tungsten C....I like Blazer on my Treo 650 better than the web browser on my Tungsten C. I was thinking if there is a way "extract files" (Blazer 4.1 or Blazer 4.3 files from the ROM updates from Treo 650, LifeDrive, etc; switching Graffitti 2 to Graffitti, adding some of my RAM programs into ROM, and maybe, upgrading the Datebook to Calendar), then install them into the ROM Update for the Tungsten C (paralleling the instructions for the "Custom ROM" for the Treo 650), then doing the ROM update on my Tungsten C.

I have not tried the "Custom ROM" on my Treo 650, but I'm contemplating it since there area some programs I like to remove from the ROM (Quick Tour, Business Connection, Software, Downloads, etc; and add a few programs). I don't think I want to take the chance of "destroying" my Treo 650, but may take the chance with my Tungsten C (so I can update it).

Has anyone attempted to change their ROM to a "Custom ROM" on a different palm line (other than the Treo 650), or is this wishful thinking and I should go and buy a Lifedrive or TX, instead?

Hi.
It is possible to customize the ROM on several palm devices using JackFlash and JackSprat (http://www.brayder.com) .These excellent programs let you delete unwated programs from Flash ROM and add new ones. Since the Tungsten C has Flash ROM, it's compatible with these programs.
I have customized the ROM on all my devices, Vx, m515, T1, T2, T3, and on my dad's TC with no problems. Doing this lets you gain several MB of space to add more programs, with the added benefit that the new programs survive a hard reset.
However, AFAIK, Blazer 4.x will not run on older devices. I read elsewhere that this has been tried over and over again with no success yet.
You can install G1 on a TC, but can't install it to ROM, because the original G2 files can't be deleted, so the G1 can't replace them.
The updated PIMs (Calendar, etc) can be partially installed to ROM, but not completely, because some files share the names of the older PIMs. I installed most of them to my T2's ROM, but in the end returned them to RAM because I didn't like to have them partially on ROM and partially on RAM.
Of course, you can delete many unwanted programs, such as the tour, RealPlayer, the original Calc and many more.
If your palm supports several languages, you can also delete the ones you don't use to gain extra ROM space for more programs.
