Important:

Dear LifeDrive User,

if you have installed the update 2 from Palm on your LifeDrive
you will encounter problems with certain PDF files, as for example
the included PalmPDF_ReadMe.pdf. Embedded fonts can not be created
on your HD or SD-Card. This will lead to missing text on PDF's using
such embedded fonts. Please ask Palm what they did. I will try to
find a solution for it too, but Palm should know about it.
Please check my website _http://www.metaviewsoft.de regularly for a
special LD-Update 2 fix.

Best regards

Wow again. Love the Search/Find feature and the render delay when zooming with the hardware buttons. Very nice. I can't get over how slick this is when I think of the poor job Adobe did with its own creation.

Of course I did find a little glitch because I play around. When I tapped the question mark, the DIA comes up including the status bar. Now I notice that although I can get my program list from the Home button (I use a T3 with Hi-Launcher), any value I choose is ignored. However, if I tap the screen rotate button, the screen rotates but gets a bit confused if I close the dialog once rotated. The pdf image is back to normal but some of the graphics at the bottom of the screen are missing and the x to close is now at the right instead of the left. If I tap the x to close, the csreen is now in rotated (landscape) mode. I did this starting in portrait mode and turning to landscape in the search dialog. As I said, minor. Who the heck does things like that :-)

In any case, another great update.

Thanks

Bob

In my TE2 the decrease of speed is very high, about five times than 0.8 , so this made the program unusable.
An now i get an error of memory at the end of hotsinc with a restore button that don't works and i mst do a soft reset.

Hi, I opened a pdf from a mail and very nice it can be opened directly in PalmPDF now :)
But sadly it wasn't displayed I have an error
NULL at XPDFCore.cc 1353. I could send you the pdf if you want.

Palmípedo: I actually hoped to get it faster. Seems I failed here. Let's see what finally the 1.0 will bring in 2 weeks.

kpouer: Just again, not enough free memory. You can send me the file, but I suggest you just wait a bit. PalmPDF should continue and just lower your settings and try again. Saying which device you use, doesn't hurt too :-)

Hi, the pdf was this one http://www.aduf.org/archives/0448.pdf
I use a Palm TX.
In fact I looked in options and removed anti aliasing ( I was in Gray Mode + antialiasing) and it works.
It works with colors and images too without antialiasing, thanks.

Hi Guys, I'm Alex from Italy, I got now the PalmPDF 0.9 now, and istalled...the slowdown rendering process is absolutely slow than 0.8! for about 300% nearly...the 0.9 is inusable that 0.8... :(

I've a Tungsten T5...
Why this big slowdown?

I agree... the slowdown was very noticeable on my TX. Is going back to version 8 as simple as just reinstalling it over the top of version 9?

MetaView
12-14-2005, 08:10 AM
Yes, this should do it. You might also first delete the old one to clean up the preference entries. I'm actually trying to fix the slow-down. The new file I/O seems to be slower then the old one, even if I thought it must be much faster. The difference isn't big on my TX, but it is the card speed which does the difference, not the device.

Is it possible to redownload 0.8 from anywhere as I downloaded the new version over the top of the older version. This new release is much slower, to the point of being unuseable on my T3. Also, I keep getting error "No display font ....." on PDFs that worked fine with 0.8

Thanks for your answer, in other post you say that the problem is in the SD, i have the program installed in the device, only the libraries are in the SD, and the SD is marked as 60X, may be is not true
As is noticed the delay is three times than 0.8 or may be more.

For the other side, thanks a lot for your program, is a great job

ok, I've released the speed update and hopefully removed some issues with the Files app on T5 and LD. It's 0.9a and available on my website http://www.metaviewsoft.de

PS: The 0.8 is still there too in case all the problems aren't fixed yet.

Just downloaded 0.9a and it's basically fine on my T3. I did find a couple of little issues.

If a string is not found, the message is too long in portrait mode. It reads "found, might be an encoding prob". I know what was intended, but I suggest that a simple "Text not found..." is sufficient.

Also, after not finding some text, the graphics in the bottom navigation bar (or whatever we call it with the page number, zoom, etc) disappear. The control is still there however if I tap where I know things are (for example the X to exit) and the graphics re-appear on the next page refresh.

Hi Metaview,

0.9 works on my Lifedrive!! I don't know why. I have deleted 0.8 then installed 0.9. It said it couldn't move the fonts to the card. I installed these manually to the HD and then it just worked.

0.9 or 0.9a???

Version 0.9a can't "see" the .pdf files I have in /Palm/Programs/PalmPDF (Zodiac 1), so I went back to 0.8, which does see them.

Telyx
12-15-2005, 11:48 AM
D'oh... it helps to have it look in the right card. I have 2 SD cards and both have a /Palm/Programs/PalmPDF folder--it was looking, by default, at the card in Slot 2 rather than Slot 1, where the .pdf files are. All is well now.

My problem is that that pdf always resets my device. I get it open about 1 out of 3 three times I try on a Zire 31.

MetaView

I guess, you haven't enough memory, or?

I love my mom
12-15-2005, 03:27 PM
I don't know. It says any mode is ok. I have 7500 k of memory. Says I need 6300 or something... It causes me to hard reset my device though, because when I reset it gets stuck in a loop and the only reset that gets it out of the loop is the hard reset. I think I am going to have to abandon palmpdf, as it causes me to reset my Zire 31 way to much, often being a hard reset. I appreciated your efforts, Henk.

Hi!

Congrats on the app, the new version renders much faster on my TX. :) I have a question: I tried using the Presentation feature and send the file over Bluetooth. PalmPDF renders, then asks me to send the file, it connects, and gives me a Succesfully sent message. The BT LED in dongle lights so it seems to be receiving a connection.

My question is, where does the files go? I have a Tecom BT3030 dongle with Widcomm drivers, and the Received files are supposed to go to a Special folder (have tried other files from my Palm or phone and they go there: C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Bluetooth Software\ftp), but I can´t find the files sent by PalmPDF, what am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance for your time. :)

G

Now the verison 0.9a is working fine in my E2, sometimes i get an error mensage but seems is not relevant. Now works the conversion to doc, in the version 0.8 did'nt worked!

I love my mom: you're using UDMH and I guess, even if it reports a lot of free memory, it isn't that much free or at least not in the requested block sizes. But there isn't much I can do here. I would suggest you upgrade your PDA...

Greek: Sending it with which software? ftp sounds like you would use Softick BT. PalmPDF uses the ObjectEx Push profile. I don't know where the files go, but I would guess you can adjust the path somewhere in your Widcomm software. No clue here either.

Palmípedo: yeap, the encoding wasn't really working in 0.8 for many files.

0.9a is definitely faster than 0.9, but still a lot slower on my T3 than 0.8.
Did some timing tests.
One page with graphics in the Astromist manual takes 4 seconds on 0.8, but 22 seconds with 9a. Anyone else experiencing this?

was ok for a while, but now cant open palmpdf (0.9a) on LD - 'cannot open application - System Error' and exits into palm prefs. Doesnt crash at least... :(

I will go back to 0.8 for the moment - where can I get it, I seem to have deleted it on my laptop...

Ok, found it on Henk's site!!

Takes the same time after booting with the up arrow held down, so it's not caused by a hack/memory resident program.

I doubt any of the font apps would cause a problem unless you configure them to change fonts in PalmPDF. (Not sure that would even work.)

MetaView
12-20-2005, 10:15 AM
The PDF renderer or PalmPDF uses it own fonts: PSFonts or TrueType, as necessary. They are rendered with AntiAliasing. But the existance of background apps can slow down or destable PalmPDF, no doubt. But for this special PDF I can't see a reason, why it should be slow. Is the page 5 always that slow on your device? Even if PalmPDF starts with page 4 (for instance) and you then go to page 5 by scrollling down? What are the settings you use? Tried a softreset before, just to be sure?

_Em
12-20-2005, 01:38 PM
Sounds like he not only tried a soft reset, but a soft reset with hacks/mras disabled. The only thing I can think of is that the page contains postscript elements that require a bit of computing power to render. Postscript is a language, like C after all. I'll check out the manual on a few other platforms and see if page 5 is slow there too, if you'd like.

MetaView

Yes, but I've tried it on a T3 too and on my TX (which is slightly slower than the T3)

Values for my TX, Settings: grayscale, 75%

starting with page 1, then going to page 5: 6s

directly starting with page 5: 7s

OK. Here's the ultimate test.
Just done a HARD reset and installed only Palm PDF 0.9a.. Also deleted all files from PalmPdf folder on SD Card, just to be sure. Figures for 0.8 in red for comparison.

On first run fonts copied to card.
1. Initial time to open page 1: 7s (4s)
2. Open page 2: 25s (yes 25!) after lots of error messages. Fonts not displaying properly. A lot of text missing. (7s No error messages)
3. Open page 3: 12s (4s)
4. Open page 4: 7s (3s)
5. Open page 5: 22s (4s)

If I open PalmPDF at page 4, it takes 21s to open (7s)
Then open page 5: 22s as usual (4s)
