Today I did take my NZ back because the Grafity area were not recognizing my writing. I did a backup to my Memory stick.

After charging the new NZ90 I tried to restore the data from the memory stick. However that was not possible, beacuse the backup/restore app. told me that this backup belonged to another unit...

Sooo I did a new backup, then copied all the data from the old backup into the new folder and restored my old backup from the new backup folder... BINGO... Easy.

glad to hear that worked bo. but that's exactly why I don't use the Sony backup/restore app. I have backupbuddy.... and it works like a charm. I tested it before I turned in my NR.... by performing a hard reset and then popping the memory stick in, running the app. and selecting the restore. that worked like a charm.

definitely sold me (and being able to schedule a backup is pretty sweet too).

But doing a hard-reset on the unit will still continue keeping it the same unit.. so there is no problem installing the backup file. it was not until I tried installing it in a New physical unit. though it was easily solved..

Yeah, the scheduled backup is very cool.

I haven't tried it, and I did put a posting in a different thread before... but the backup proggie seems to just copy the files from the RAM to the MS.

One should simply be able to put the files back with either ms-import if you have backed the MS up to your PC ... or even via clie-files... NO?

I wasn't aware there was any kind of compression or anything it did to the files when it copied them from RAM to MS.

I was more under the interpretation it copied them into a 'folder' basically on the MS and you could restore from there. Restoring should be able to be done with clie-files or MS-IMPORT (if the files are on your PC).
... enough rambling... I don't know if anyone has 'tested' this out as of yet... but would think it would work the same as the 'restore' proggie.

There were no kind of compression, it just copied all the files to the MemoryStick.

However, there is a hidden file with what looks like a serial number for each backup folder, probably refering the a hardware reference, because it is the same number for multible backups from the same unit and a different number for a backup from a different hardware unit.

When refering to Backing up your Clie files... What gets backed up? The entire Internal Ram/Rom or just specific files. I'm trying to determine if I need bother.

Thx

When using the MemoryStick Backup tool, it appears that Everything gets backed up. Because after i restored my data into the new unit everything was back to the starting point, I was very pleased with the result.

It IS worth bothering... the Clie IS a computer and it holds your data, it WILL crash. its only a questions of when. Once you have one fatal crash, you will enjoy your backup.
