I have been looking at getting a powerbook to replace my windows desktop. I have a couple of questions that the people at the apple store aren't likely to know the answer to.

1. Is there a palm desktop for mac, or does it sync with some native program?

2. How well does drive mode work on a mac?

3. What is the extent of bluetooth compatibility? I know I can sync, but can I "easily" transfer files, surf internet, access SD cards (maybe through samba)?

4. Are there any quirks, bugs, etc I should know about before I plunk down the cash for a mac.

Any input would be a help.
Thanks,
Geoff

Hi! There's an entire Mac resource at Palm. Check it out (http://www.palm.com/us/macintosh/)!

Now for the answers to your questions...

1. There is a Palm Desktop for Mac (http://www.palm.com/us/software/desktop/mac.html). However I prefer using The Missing Sync (http://www.markspace.com/).

2. Drive mode works great!

3. I use Drag'n'Tooth (http://www.ecamm.com/mac/dragntooth/) to tranfer files to my Palm. I rarely transfer files from my Palm to the Mac. However, I sometimes use The Missing Sync to sync via Bluetooth and WiFi.

4. The only "quirk" is that OSX is a totally new environment compared to Windows. There are many things to learn or unlearn (I grew up with PCs). I now find myself doing everything with my Powerbook. My PC is just being maintained for games. Check out my blog (http://www.suplido.com/joel).

I'm sure others will chime in with their Mac and Palm experiences.

Good luck with your Mac purchase... (but if I were you, I'd wait until Macworld to see what Apple has to offer in January).

My next thread was gonna be in the Mac forum asking about when the new computers will come out. I noticed the info on the power books was kind of old. I figured they would come out at christmas. I guess not.

Thank you

Apple never* preannounces product releases. In the meantime, check out the Mac Buyer's Guide: Know When to Buy Your Mac (http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/), which tracks the previous release dates and makes educated guesses about when the next ones will come out. For Powerbooks, they say "Recommendation: Buy - Product recently updated".

* "What, never?" "Yes, never." "What, NEVER!?" "Well, hardly ever."
