View Full Version : Hard reset using MS Pro (256)

Had an interesting problem today. My NX70 hard reset. I was using my 256 MSPro (formatted as described before) as the main card. I had the update installed, Flash Enable and Backupman on the card. Normally, after a hard reset with a regular MS, I could just browse the MS, run Flash Enable to get back my flash memory, then browse the MS for Backupman and in a couple of minutes I was back in business. But this time.......................
I could not access the MS Pro (therefore can't run Flash Enable or Backupman) at all because my NX did not have the update installed, since it is lost from RAM after a hard reset. I suppose I could clear out some flash memory and put it in there. Any others exeprienced similar problems or have any others thought about this and come up with a solution.
Thanks

Thats a goos point. You couldn't keep backups on the pro because it would not be recognized when hard reset, even when sony releases the patch. Obviously the patch would disappear on a hard reset.

Darn, I had not thought of that.
I might just keep my regular 128 and use cf

same here...........also even though it is a hassle, I thought about keeping a regular 128 ms backed up with the essesntials to get my started. I could keep the patch on it and re-install from a PC.

I suppose thats as much a hassle as keeping the cf driver on a 128 and then restoring from that.

It is possible that this patch might actually be released as a ROM flash.
Maybe that's why it's taking them so long to get it out :D

The update will be available in RAM on the next NX model...

Happened to me twice already. I keep an extra back on a 128 like someone suggested. It is a pain because without your stick, unless your at home near your pc you don't have access to the update.. Normally my notebook is nearby, but still.... Otherwise if you cleared some flash memory it still wouldn't show without fash enable or jack flash from the mspr. that wouldn't work without the update...right?

Edited for grammar and spelling :)

Thanks for the advice. I'm about to make a backupman backup on my older 128meg ms. Sorry you had to find out the hard way, but we all appreciate it.

I appreciate this post. I just purchased a 512mb mspro for $236 and I recieve it tomorrow. There's is room in my carring case for an ms, so I"ll back up the basics on my 128mb ms and use the 512 for everyday use.

I'm looking forward to this...I hope I don't later hope I would have gotten the 1gb. :D

Actually since you brought it up, this would be my first alternative!

tried to backup the card using the backupbuddy feature.......doesn't look like it worked. Gues I will have to use MS Import and copy the MS Pro files over to my hard drive, then use same method to put on a regular MS

I always keep a small MS 32mb stick in my carrying case and I have a several backup copies of my 128mb sticks on my hard drive. I also keep copies of the update patch and WiFi drivers. Even with the MS Pro, you still may have to load the driver back on after a hard reset. I wouldn't count on Sony making a permanent driver in the Clie OS itself.

BTW, crashes can trash memory sticks too, I know that from experience.

The 32mb stick originally came with one of my cameras.

MS Backup has been the only reliable bachup app for me.

D@mn it! What a pain in the @ss! I didn't think about this before I got mine.

So even the new CF driver cannot handle having your backups either I suppose.

Tixx, do you mean backing up to the cf. If so, thats exactly what I do. I actually have backups with backupman on both the ms pro and the cf.

After a hardreset though neither the CF or the Pro can be used to restore the device as neither would be recognized with their RAM files gone, no?

Yes, you're correct.

Mybe if either the CF or the Pro files were put in ROM with JackFlash, though I do know that one cannot see those files after a hardreset, but wonder if they could be used by the CF or the Pro for a restore. Any info would be greatly appreciated:)

That's why I carry a spare stick with both patches.

Well that sucks.

It does suck because you're right. You would need flash- enable or jackflash itself in ram to see the updates stored in flash by jackflash after the hard reset.

I don't like being right sometimes. Thanks for the info.

Wish there was a way around this without having to carry extra items. Maybe I should carry a spare clie to boot.;)

Me too. I found out the hard way. After a hard reset I couldn't see the ms to restore and then it dawned on me that the nx update was gone and that I pretty much had a 260.00 useless little stick in my nx for about 3 hrs. And so now I carry the little blue stick around to save the little white sticks butt if hell decides break loose in my little clie world. Actually, I just keep one 8 in the car and a 128 in my note book case, so it's not to big a problem. Fortunately I don't have as many hard resets anymore. I guess apps are becoming more stable now. Even through beta testing the cf driver, I never once had a hard reset. Still it would be nice if the jf people updated jackflash so that the apps/drivers placed in flash were available immediately after a hard reset. Guess we can't have evrything... yet. :)

Just found a half @ss solution, but at least to carry an extra stick on my innopocket hard case http://www.outletpc.com/c0707.html I'm going to glue this holder onto the back:)http://store3.yimg.com/I/outletpc_1736_1033960

Cool, for depending on where I'm at and what I'm doing I use my innopocket also. Great ideal! I'm checking out the site for other stuff now.

So can we link from our private web sites also? And if so, why even have a mod appove any pics posted unless otherwise challeged or reported after being displayed?

Yep. I guess it is only for pics not hosted on websites. Just quote my post with the picture in it and you can see where the picture is coming from. All you do is past the link into the IMG option above the box were you put the text of your post and Bam! it is there. I know it doesn't make sense to me at the moment either. It might be a server size issue and that they have to store uploaded pics or something like that.

Yeah, I guess you'd be right about the server size and all. Thanks for explaining.
