Voting is still open for the 1SRC blog and wiki; Listen to 1SRC podcasts on your PSP; Multitasking is the subject of this week's 1SRC editorial; Palm's Holiday Gift Guide; and I rant about annoying Palm-isms and why over/under clocking devices doesn't sit well with me. Another great gift idea that I though of after recording this week's Tech Talk and 1SRC podcasts are two books: "Piloting Palm" by Andrea Butter and David Pogue and "On Intelligence" by Jeff Hawkins.

Any links for those?

Forgot to talk about how overclocking kills your device faster as well due to it wears down the processor. Same goes for a computer. Also, you should have stated that the CLIE HHE devices don't have to worry about this because its what the processor is expected to do. I feel many CLIE users might turn away from UnderclockDA now even though it does nothing harmful to your system.

I didn't mention it because I don't know anything about HHE devices. Does my NZ90 have one? Don't know.

I love the content of the podcasts. I always have. However, I do have a complaint. I only mention it because it drives me crazy! ( I know many of you are going to say "If you can't handle it, just don't listen, but it can't be just me who feels this way)

Alan unfortunately (unlike Jeff) uses "uh" so much while talking that it's really difficult to concentrate on what he is saying. "and-uh" "the-uh" "uh" "um-uh"

I really do respect anyone willing to do these podcasts and the difficulty in always having something to say, but if it's at all possible, try to decrease the amount of "uh"s.

best regards,
David

Here are a list of devices with HHE(Sony handheld engine):
UX50, UX40, TH55, VZ90 (the NZ90 uses an Intel chip)

and, the PSP (which uses a much faster version, I forgot the numbers, though, 300 somthing?)

It acctualy is a chip set, (or is it a system on chip?) which includes a processor and some audio, video and other chips. The core processor underclocks it self according to the power needed, to conserve power.

I never overclock, don't like the idea of tinkering with my processor. 200MHz on my NX is fast enough (remember that win95 could use less then that?). And besides, the rate determining factor on my NX73 is the tinny RAM and slow memorystick read/write speeds. Overclocking would never fix these.

And yeah, the T|C certanly needs and update.

Alan, thanks for the rants. Palm has definitely dropped the ball. They must be expending practically all resources on Treos. All accessories should be available and functional for Holiday shopping. As far as the Camera Companion accessory goes, you might want to read this (http://discussion.brighthand.com/palmhandhelds/showthread.php?s=&postid=482806#post482806). Maybe the update will fix, maybe not.

Other than being a gadget geek, what do you use each different handheld for and how do you kep them in sync? Maybe a good topic for week of December 26, particularly for those households with new introductions to their PDA families. ;)

TC is no longer available for purchase from palm's online store. Two retail stores are listed in palm site: office depot and FranklinCovey. I tried both. In office depot web site, a message says: " THIS ITEM HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED" when trying to add an TC to shopping cart. In FranklinCovey, it says the item is sold out.

Basically, there is no regular channel you can buy a brand new TC, why palm is still putting it on its line up???

I don't believe we will ever see a TC PIM update from palm, but hope palm is cooking up some kind of TC2, maybe something like ux50 ;)

That sure seems to be the case. While we've heard about possibly six new Treos for 2006 (Treo 700w, 700p, Lowrider, Hollywood, and 2 flippers) there has been no mention of new Palm handhelds or Mobile Managers. I fully expect to see a new Mobile Manager of some kind in 2006 and it is hard to believe that there won't be a new handheld in there as well, but so far, mum has been the word of the day.

I use my Treo and Tungstens T5 and C on a daily basis. The Treo is primarily used as a phone. I find myself relying on the address book and date book functions the most. I do check e-mail and weather on the Treo, however, I keep those activities to a minium because I only have a 5MB data plan with Verizon.

The Tungsten T5 is where I do all of my note taking (business meetings), read e-books, listen to podcasts, play games, watch movies/TV shows from DVD...all of the cool stuff you can do with a Palm handheld. The TC is used mostly at home to check e-mail, websites, etc over my home Wi-Fi network. If I'm going to a conference or other trade show where I know that there will be a Wi-Fi network I'll bring it along in place of the T5.

My other 18 or so Palm OS devices mostly sit in a container until I need them to test something out for work or something that has come up in a discussion forum (Brighthand and 1SRC are the sites I help moderate). I also use them when researching a topic for my book, the Grassnet Palm Powered Desk Reference. (Yes, that was a shameless plug.)

As for keeping them all in sync, I cheat. I'll either beam the AddressDB.pdb and DateBookBD.pdb files over to my TC (which I've loaded the new PIMs on) or in the case of the Treo (which has the older Palm/Handspring PIMs) I'll export my T5 Address/Date Books and reimport the data for the Treo. I HotSync with Palm Desktop with an occasional HotSync with Outlook just to keep my contacts up to date over there. I load up the other devices only if I need some test data. (My Clie, is really only a test/toy device now. Sorry guys.)

Yep, I've just confirmed this. Which gets me back to one of my original rants: would it really kill Palm to hire someone to keep their website up to date?! I mean seriously, come on. Despite the fact that I have two contacts in the Palm marketing department, I honestly don't get answers back from them. And that is a shame because I have to rely on the published materials (Palm catalogs found at the in-store displays) and the Palm website (main website, stores, KB, support, and developers area) to dig up information on what their products and services. If the site doesn't like that the TX or the Z22 are compatible I can't in good conscience tell someone to go buy a Palm Universal Wireless Keyboard. If I do, and it doesn't work, it makes me look bad. (I was talking with someone after this week's podcast who says they got a free Palm UWK when they purchased the TX. I don't know what keyboard driver is being used. I'm assuming it's the T5 driver.)

So, my point about the three Palm rants is that they need to keep communications with customers clear and accurate. Just for the record, I don't get free hardware/software from Palm, so my views aren't being influenced by gear. To Palm, I'm just another customer like all of you.

Your kidding. Jeff did that yeegh thing all the time and drove me nuts. I find the current Podcasts much easier to listen to. For one thing the recording quality is much better without all the feedback and static from before and the content is just as solid as always. I've actually listened to the last few podcasts all the way through without skipping through most of it and that is something I hadn't done for months.

I am puzzled: why are these names used in OS5 when we have names like contacts, Calendar?

Also: where are these stored when you do a backup? I can't find them in my Backup folder. (I am using XP prof.)

The new PIMs (Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, Memos) are Palm enhanced/value added applications. To preserve compatibility with other, possibly older, applications, the old database names are still used. So, even though on a T3/T5/TX the contacts list application is called "Contacts" the database being used is still called AdressDB.pdb, after the original application, Address Book.

These files don't go into the Backup folder in your HotSync profile folder. They get backed up in the PIM folders used by Palm Desktop (I have no idea where the data gets backed up if you are using Outlook. It is probably up to use to setup Outlook .pst file backups). So, on my system, my Contacts back up file is in:

C:\Program Files\palmOne\<HotSyncID folder>\datebook\datebook.bak

The file that is used by Palm Desktop is the datebook.dat file. The same logic applies for the other three PIMs.

It has 100Mhz, 266MHz and 333Mhz. It says at 266Mhz most of the time. I think those are the numbers. The PS3 will also have a HHE/Cell processor in it. Sony's becoming more proprietary everyday, although the PS3 will have SD memory in it. I believe its the first device of SONY to use SD memory.

Alan, I applaud you for taking over the reins of 1src, but please, try to consciously cut down on the Ums and Ughs. They're really annoying to the listeners. It's an unconscious behavior, we know, but it's still distracting. I don't think anyone expects it to go away altogether, but if you could, please try and cut it down. I'm just asking, not demanding, mind you. It'd be nice.

I know you're just geting started, but it'd be nice if you could get a set up where you wouldn't accidently touch the microphone while you're recording as well. You've got an excellent speaking voice, and those accidental bumps into the microphone are rather jarring to the listeners. They're really loud in comparison to the rest of the podcast. Perhaps some sort of normalization before the 'cast goes to "air" might cut out the jarringly loud bumps.

Now for my critique of your content: you're completely wrong about everything and should be shot for heresy. :p

Keep up the good work.

Hi Alan, I just assumed I had some conflicting software (although with no idea what). The existing PWK driver does not work with the (my) TX.

I would not have taken what the web site says to be any confirmation one way or the other in terms of compatibility. If I saw that I would have just assumed that they had not updated the website.. I'm glad you mentioned it else I would have been chasing my tale.

I have a cradle and the audio out on this does not work with the TX however the web site says this cradle is compatible with the TX. The cradles audio out worked with the LD.

ok just saw the earlier post perhaps the old version of the driver will work... will check it out.
