View Full Version : Docs To Go- Mangles Mac documents?

The Windows version of Docs To Go features 'DocSync' which maintains proper formatting of PC files, even the stuff that isn't supported on the Palm. When I was using Windows, I really liked this feature and it worked very well.

But from what I understand, the Mac version does not have this. Do Mac files get messed up if a file is edited on the Palm and then synchronized?

That would defeat the purpose of the program for me, unfortunately...

With DocsToGo 7, basic formatting is maintained (centre, bold, italics, indent, etc) but styles are lost. For example, if you create a "heading" style (say italics, bold, 14point and indented margin) then the formatting will be maintained across syncs, but it will no longer have that style when syncing back to the Mac. It means that it will still look the same (italics, bold, etc), but you can't change a style and have it change throughout the document. You would need to change all other headings manually or select them all manually and reapply the style.

I hope that makes sense.

However, you can't edit PowerPoint files. I don't know why, but they're all locked on the handheld.

Anyway, I'm about to uninstall v8.0. Can't see the point in paying for it: PalmPDF does PDF files better and nothing else in DTG seems to have changed (other than the icons). Why pay?

Cheers,
Tim

Thanks Tim, that's exactly the info I was looking for.

What about pictures, tables, etc.?

Usually pictures are maintained between syncs, but sometimes not (I haven't made the effort to determine why - it seems to be file specific). Tables seem OK.

One other point is that special characters (eg greek or mathematical characters) are not synced. DTG (ver 7 - don't know about 8) replaces them with a question mark. This has frustrated me many times... I'd be keen to know if this has been fixed with ver 8.

Other comments: don't rely on DTG for any indication of what the printed page will look like.

However, after saying all that, I actually like DTG. It has served me well - I'm just dispointed in ver 8.0, it seems a little light-on for a mjor upgrade. It seems to me it's just an incremental upgrade with added PDF support. :( Maybe 8.1...

Cheers,
Tim
