View Full Version : UX40 instead of 50????
Hey guys, I've stated before I want another UX50 but really have no use. Well, I've noticed the UX40 goes for significantly cheaper. Does it have the same issues with screen whine? What is a good price for one? What do you guys think? I figure I could use this as my laptop for whatever and if I'm on the go I can't WiFi anyway. All I really need is bt to connect with my phone, so.... EVDO, so close I can taste it.

yea I have a ux40. It does have the same screen wine issue. I got mine for about $200 last march with a memory stick, so I'm sure you can find one for cheaper than that now. I don't used wifi that much either, but I bought a wifi memory stick anyways for whenever i do need wifi. I found out its actually cheaper to just get a ux40 +wifi memory stick than a ux50. The wifi stick has better range too. It all depends on what you need though. I'd say go for it.
How much are those WiFi sticks? I ashamed to say I honestly do not know where or how to get one. Ebay?

Well, you can get them on Ebay, but I got mine on Amazon.com. I think I paid like $40-$45 for it. The price seemed like it varied a lot on Ebay. If you want to look it up "wifi memory stick" or "wifi memory card". The company that makes them is called Hagiwara. is where I got it on Amazon. is it on Ebay
Not to be redundant but all the hardware is the exact same, right? Also, what kind of battery life is expected with the WiFi MS? Is it about the same as a 50 or worse?

By "all the hardware is the exact same" do you mean between the ux40 and ux50? If so then yes, the only difference between the two is wifi. Well, since the wifi stick is slightly more powerful than the ux50's built in wifi, the wifi might not last as long with the ux40. I'm not sure, but the fact that the wifi stick is drawing power from the memory stick slot might also make the power drain slightly faster (I am merely guessing here though, so you might want to ask someone like JA who would probably know). I almost always use a battery extender when I'm using the wifi memory stick. That is something else you should really look into regardless of wifi. For about $30-40 you can buy a seperate cradle (or charging case) and usb powered battery extender. That way you wouldn't have to worry about the battery draining whether you're using wifi, bluetooth, beaming, or watching movies.
