View Full Version : Memory Stick: "not enough space" to backup despite plenty of room

This is odd...
I have over 20 mb free on my Memory Stick, and am trying to backup my RAM, as usual, which is about 6300k. Haven't had a problem until yesterday, when MS Backup app said, "There is not enough free space in Memory Stick Media."
I did install a 3.5 mb isilo file straight to the Memory Stick using MS Import/Export yesterday, but since I still have so much space left over still, I'm kind of stymied.
Any ideas?
FWIW, was able to backup to another memory stick.

Probably you may not formatted the MS before use? If I remember correctly unformatted solid state memories be it digicams or Clies may produce these symptoms if used unformatted. I would suggest to make backup the existing data inside the MS before attempting to perfom a format. Good Luck

Thanks for the suggestion. However it had been formatted.
On the bright side, I was able to backup to an entirely new archive in MS Backup and delete the original backup. So things seem to be back to normal.

I would suggest using MS Im/Export to get the stick data to your hard drive. Then format the stick and copy it back... format the stick using Clie software not the windows operating system.

I had the same kind of problem. For some reason I couldn't back up to the MS until I first deleted the previous backup. So if you figure something out please let us know.

as far as I can tell, the memory stick backup requires a contiguous block of memory and the available memory on your memory stick was made up of many smaller blocks.
As already stated, the best solution is to copy the files your computer, delete the stick then put them back on.

If you are running a VFS manager (such as PiDirect, MSMount, PowerRun etc), make sure you disable it before you back up RAM to MS. It WILL cause problems like recusive loops (saving virtual files from MS to MS) and will crash the Palm or run out of memory.
I have had this happen a few times when I backed up the CLIE and forgot to disable the VFS manager.
