There's a PPC(I mean WM) vs. Palm debate/discussion in the TH forum. The specs on that beast are awesome, I personally just wouldn't use WM.

Why is that? Palm is dead...give up on it. Have you seen WM2005? It's amazing.

Palm isn't dead... ;)
They are fine. They are in better shape than Sony, so why aren't you talking about them?
Palm will never die. Garnet will, but we will have Linux Palm OS and Cobalt waiting for us :)

The OS market will never be a monopoly as other companies will always have a market share, despite how small that small market share may be. Look at Apple and Microsoft. Microsoft utterly dominates the Desktop OS market while Apple has hung around throughout the years and is now just gaining strength again. WM may become more dominate as Palm is being stagnate but Palm will last in the market and their next OS will be sure to leap frog WM. Now, once they leapfrog, I suspect they'll sit their lazy butts down and doing nothing for a long enough time to let microsoft come back and overtake once again.

I think the Universal is amazing, if it ran palm I would buy it without question. As it runs WM, that is the strongest determining factor, at least for me.

Going from a UX to an HTC is a huge jump in terms of weight though. The beauty of the UX is how much quality gear can be fit in such a tiny package. The HTC is like a brick in comparison - you wouldn't want to drop it on your toe :D

The UX is small. But a UX+Phone=Universal :D

It may be a brick but at least it has enough to justify it. I mean, VGA res, much larger screen, 1.3mp camera, etc... it's larger but I mean, man is it nice. Is it even possible to run Palm on a PPC device? The hardware is similiar. What's the reason why not?

I know Garnet wouldn't work, but Cobalt might...

The ridiculous price? You can have a laptop for that kind of money.....

I expect the price to go down... ;)

I'm not talking about why not the companies do not make a Palm like that. I'm talking about actually buying PPC and putting a different running OS. Apple and PC's run different Hardware, not for long though, which is why someone can not just run Tiger on a PC. Well PPC run the same hardware as palms, why can't someone just swap OS's. Is it embedded in the motherboard? If it is, is the processor powerful enough to fully run an emulator? I would love to buy a PPC and run Palm.

Some programmer might be able to make a slow running emulator on it... ;)

Should I make a new post on this? Most Palm users are happy with the software but just want more recent/better technology. I'm not tempted by any PPC software, though it may be good, but I am certainly tempted by some of the specs out there. I'm sure there are many Palm loyalist who switch just to get the specs that Palm hasn't put out. I.E. VGA, graphics card (except sony), removable battery, etc...

I'll be getting my brand new O2 XDA EXEC via FEDEX. I'll post what I think about it as soon as I have it.

Palm IS dead. Maybe not officially, but have you checked the latest PDA sales reports? Palm releasing a WM version of the Treo (it's major device), is like throwing the white flag.

I have a friend with a Siemens PDA running WM2003 with a pretty solid PSP emulator on it. The only problem is that each ROM is about 600+ MB. The performance is actually really good. I couldn't imagine what it would look like on the HTC Universal. I am all over it, just waiting for the price to drop to about $600-700.

To the original poster on this thread, I made a post a while back about the Jasjar and my switch from the UX50. I also uploaded some comparison shots:
http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=98114&highlight=jasjar

I am using the Jasjar and have it tweaked out the way I want it. WM5.0 has huge speed problems. I have worked them out with a program called SPB Pocket Plus. Yes, the weight was a little adjustment, but I just tie the drawstring on my scrub pants a little tighter.

My only other complaint is that the camera lens is exposed all the time, unlike on the UX. The camera is fixed and doesn't swivel like the UX, which makes some shots a little difficult to make (but I have worked a way out of holding the JJ to take pics).

Battery life is awesome! You guys won't believe how long you can surf on a full charge. I haven't timed it, but at least I don't have to sit and watch my battery level drop while WiFi is on. I used it alot initially, but since I have it now the way I like it, I charge every 4 days or so. Excellent battery life.

Uhhh, so can you change the OS? Not emulate it but, like uninstalling windows and running linux. Change it. I'm assuming the answer is probably no but I just want to know why or if is just very challenging and not impossible.

About the white flag. Palm is the hardware company. They'll be around for a while. Palm the OS will always survive even if its at a 5% market share, they will be around and the loyalist will buy it. Saying a OS is dying so jump ship is not logical. If the OS can fulfill your needs and a customer is satisfied, they will stay and buy more. Yes WM is doing better and growing and Palm has been dying for a while but they will not die. Technically, their fate rides with their new OS, no matter how long it takes to come out. If it is as good as its suppose to be they'll take back market share. If its not, palm can keep building those cheap T/E or Z22 and the average population will flock and palm will continue its business.
