View Full Version : TX stability compared to Sony Clie NX

I've had my TX now for just over a week.

While I'm overall pleased with the TX, I do find a couple of things annoying.

First, what's with the lack of an LCD? I mean, how much could a little light cost, when you're purchasing thousands of them? I can (almost) understand the lack of a cradle, to save money and reduce the cost, but hey... an LCD light so we know when the TX is charging/connected to WiFi/Fully charged?

My biggest gripe, however, is the instability of the TX. I previously owned (and still own) a Sony NX80. It has a camera which does stills and video, voice recorder, keyboard, television remote control emulator software, etc. etc. I easiliy go through a MONTH without any soft resets or crashes. I've loaded everything but the kitchen sink on this (back in the days when I'd try just about ANY Palm software) and the device just about never resets.

I've now had the TX just over a week, and three or four soft resets are typical. I also had a reset that completely erased ALL of my data! Reinstalling from a hotsync worked very well, but why in this time of the Palm OS lifecycle, does a Palm device still soft reset on such a high frequency?

Can't understand how Sony can make a stable device two years ago, and Palm can't.

Again, I like the TX, but these soft resets are really annoying.

I agree, its lil sad to see that Palm doesn't even know how to use its own system while Sony does. TX was not as stable as my TH so I gave back the TX because it isn't as stable and the crappy screen was just horrible to me >.<

Most Palm users are used to it by now. My NX80 never crashed. :)
But, I had a Treo, and my dad has a Treo 650, and it never crashes. Could it be the memory driver? Because it seems the LifeDrive (Hard Drive), and the T5 and TX (Flash) are unstable. Must be a memory problem.

Shel, did you precisely follow Palm's upgrade directions, which included renaming your backup folder? Have you installed any incompatible third party applications? I have observed the bulk of resets are caused by either or both of the above. A list of applications tested on TX is here (http://palmfacts.com/devices/tx/software.php).

Yeah, make sure you start totally from scratch when 'upgrading' - I've never been able to do a straight-memory dump without problems creeping in.

That said, the newer NVFS Palms will be a bit less stable, esp. with older apps that haven't got workarounds coded into them specifically for NVFS.
They're fine if you just use the stock apps, but third-party app support is not so fantastic because they have to be NVFS-aware to be totally stable, as opposed to the more understood and forgiving non-NVFS Palms.

I removed ALL programs from my backup folder, then hotsynced just my contacts and appointments to the new TX.

After that, I loaded apps one at a time, making sure to download the newest version if I didn't already have it.

I have held off installing SharkTX fix, just to be on the safe side.

After a week of the Web app working fine, it now crashes *every* time I try to load it! On Friday, when I tried to load Web app., my Palm TX crashed, and lost all data. Since then, the Web app won't load without soft resetting my Palm.

Really annoying. Not sure what's causing it to crash my TX, but I'd really like to be able to use it.

Anyone have suggestions on getting the Web app to work?

Thanks!

Did you hack on Graffiti 1? I have heard it can conflict with Blazer.

Ive had my TX for acouple of weeks and i couldnt be happier. im coming from TH55 which was, still is, a great pda (my backup now).

I havent had a single noteable problem. Im amazed. The changeover was seamless. I tried the LifeDrive for 30 days before the TX and returned bcos is was so unstable, so palm have got something right.

I can only think there is definately one or two third party apps that you are using that arent fully compatible. but i think within a month most apps will make any tweaks necessary to work smoothly with the TX.

I will say that the TX isnt super fast. Im coming from the TH55 and i would say its only marginally faster moving between apps, if at all. But i get approx 8-10 hrs battery so im not complaining!

Im about to install my boxwave screen protector ...so im just waiting for my sena case now :p

What I didn't like bout the TX was the lil lag going from app to app and I think its because of that darn persistent memory >.< TH was pretty instant while TX you can notice the lag.

Well, actually, a Handheld without an "LCD" means no screen (unless you're using OLED, as on the VZ...) I guess you mean an "LED", and yeah, they're pritty cheep. I've always depended on that as the power indicator, and it'd be really hard to know if your gadget is on without it. (How come palm likes to make their stuff look cheep?)
