I am trying, unsuccessfully to do an IR Hotsynch with my IBM T30 laptop running Win 2000 Pro. The manual says it shoud work but the T30 and my SJ33 don't see each other. Has anyone gotten this to work?
Thanks

Maybe you can try to lower your IR port speed (to 57,600bps) to see if it helps.

Also have you enabled Hotsync through the COM port used by IrDA?

On my T30, the IR works directly without using a virtual COM port.
I messed around with it and finally got it to work. One of the issues is that the SJ33 doesn't seem to have very strong IR beaming and it needs to be VERY close to the IR port of the laptop.

BUt frankly, try to avoid hotsync via IR u unless you got no choice coz it drains the battery fast.

Yes. I generally try and avoid it. But sometimes when I'm traveling it's useful.
I have just ordered a short hotsynch/charger USB cable and that should be a lot better.

Yes, thats exactly what I use. Very useful indeed.
Hi!
I have the same problem with my laptop and my SJ33.
Okay, I use the USB-Cable too, but sometimes it comes quite handy to use IR.
A far as I know it's a bug with the SJ33, because if I connect the Clie to the charger the IR works, but on battery it isn't working.
By the way, I have the same problem when I try to connect to my mobile phone. If the Clie is plugge to AC everything works fine, without AC => NO GO.
I hope Sony will fix this with an update (if possible?!)
Cheers,
Jago

Thats a weird kind of problem you have.
Try setting the connection speed to a lower setting.

Hi,
Mine is working now. There are 2 things you need to be sure of:
1. Your laptop is properly configured to receive IR (you must turn receiving from digital camera off in IR setting).
2. You put the SJ33's IR port right next to the IR port on the laptop. I used to have a Palm Vx and it worked from a foot away. The SJ33 seems to be a lot weaker and need to be right next to the port.
The instructions for the SJ33 are clear that it can HotSynch with IR.

Hi!
To be more precise on my problem:
Everything is configured 100% correct, i.e. my Clie T425 is working perfectly with the IR on both, laptop and mobile.
But the SJ33 isn't. I definitly need to plug in the AC, then everything is working perfectly WITHOUT changing any settings.
Strange, but true :)
I also found a message of another user at another board who has the same problem, so at least I'm not alone :D
But I can live with that (at the moment), the only thing I'm missing is a scratch-resistant cover :p
Cheers,
Jago

I have noticed this too. I had two Palms and never had to aim the palm carefully at all -- just plop it down, aimed in the general direction, and it synched. In contrast, my Clie wants to be within three inches and perfectly lined up with the IR port on my Inspiron.

I wonder if the system update (http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/clie/sj33/softupdates/) from Sony fixes it? The update is dated 8th of April.
Nope, it doesnt
I saw the patch too and tried it, because it is called "IrDASysPatch", but it is not the solution for my problem.
Same situation as before, tried to connect to my mobile and I had a timeout error again.
Plugged to AC, no changes in the config & 10 seconds later => BINGO, no problem to connect.
And it is the same situation with hotsyny.
Maybe the next patch will help :D

The system upgrade doesn't fix the problem for me either. I have the same thing: IR HotSynch works (slowly) if AC is plugged in. Otherwise not. Of course if AC is plugged in I have the cable to do a cable HotSynch. So the IR is still pretty useless.
The Clie manual clearly says IR works, so it must be a nasty bug.

Oh, it's not that bad, I only wish I've bought a Thungsten :D
No, just kidding, but maybe waiting for the TG50 might have been the better choice.
Otherwise I'm 98% satisfied with the SJ33, but it is not the best choice to use AC to fetch my mail when I'm on the road :(
That's not exactly the point why I'm using a PDA :p
Cheerio,
Jago
@bertradio
It seems to me you've exactly the same problem :p
I really don't know why for some people the thing is working and for some (us!) not
I even tried to hard reset the device, install nothing on it except the patch, but it didn't work out either!
But I hope Sony is working on the problem (the patch shows that they are aware of it)!
By the way, beaming between my two Clie's work perfectly, Omniremote works, AirClock works, so IR is at least working.
But that's almost useless, because the two most important things for me are HotSync and connection to my mobile.
Cheers,
Jago
